Maternal Inquiries Empty
PostSubject: Maternal Inquiries   Maternal Inquiries EmptyThu 24 Apr 2014, 16:59

Hears-the-Song watches with anxious confidence as Rends-the-Gar faces off unarmed against the two members of his tribe. As the challenge comes to a close, she releases the breath she did not realize she had been holding and she looks curiously over her shoulder.

Had Mal just mentioned my mother and potentially having information on her?

Her concern for Rends had so distracted her that she had failed to dig deeper into his comments. The elder made his way around the crowd in no direction in particular. Zoe walks briskly over to him and places herself determinedly, yet not disrespectfully, in his path.

"You said you may have additional information about my mother or know someone who might? How did you even know others were looking into her whereabouts? I certainly had not spoken of her since arriving here."

Her tone is curious and a bit suspicious of the man who always seemed to know just a little bit more than he was willing to share.

The Silent Strider elder looked at Zoe, his tone grave. "Everyone has questions. Your Ragabash wishes to know of his ancestors and his place in the coming days. Your Philodox wants to bridge the gulf between tribes and nations and he searches for the means to do so among the spirits. Your Galliard desires to understand his visions and their mystic source... even your totem spirit does not know everything, though it would like you to believe that..."

"You are already aware of some answers pertaining to the ephemeral- and I think that is good. For you, I fear, secrets of flesh and blood intertwine with the agendas of spirits." The elder's voice did not sound regretful in the slightest.

"As for how I became privy to the matter at hand- many spirits are very happy to tell what they know... for a price. Your past in Galveston is not widely known,  but that is a very different thing from saying it unknown entirely." Malchizedek's eyes glinted, reflecting the starlight above.

"How much do you know about your father, Zoe Kostas?"

Zoe nods solemnly as Mal lists off the desires of her packmates, noticing Rends-the-Gar not having made that list. She laughs softly and smirks at the mention of the Laughing Stranger's air of omniscience.

"Why would the intertwining of spiritual agendas and flesh and blood secrets be something to fear? Are we Garou not flesh and blood intertwined with the agenda of Garou, Wyld, Wyrm, and Weaver?"  Her tone is respectful but a tad perplexed.

Her eyes grow suspicious again. "For a price, you say?  What is it about a single Garou from Galveston that warrants bribing a spirit for information concerning her past?"

At the mention of her father her eyes grow proud and sad simultaneously.  "As you likely already know, I never met the man. By the time I made it to Nacogdoches and people who knew him, he had passed on.  From what little I have been told, he was a great warrior of Gaia and a member of the Iron Rider tribe, though I believe he was born into a different tribe.  That is the extent of what I know about Tycheros Kostas."

"I said that everyone has questions. This includes even the vaunted theurges. You and I both have questions regarding your family history." Malchizedek fixed her with a piercing gaze, as if his cool dark eyes could scrutinize her soul.

His voice was quiet and steady as he continued: "The machinations of the Triat and their filial broods are all consuming, but I was being more specific than that. Unfortunately, I do not have much in the way of answers for you. I only have suspicions. I suspect a denizen of the spirit realms has had dealings with either one or both of your parents, in an unusual way." His eyes drifted away from her, toward the garrulous activities of the Get of Fenris.

""Your Father was an interesting case. There are many Garou that knew him, but few seem to know anything of substance about him, and your mother is even more obscure. I am not surprised that mundane searches have turned up little. I myself have attempted to discover your parents' secrets with little success. The spirits, even wise and cunning servants of my tribal totem, Owl, know almost nothing about them." His attention swept back to Zoe, his leonine face tired and worn.

"I find this... disturbing."

Zoe's eyes narrow defensively as she returns a piercing gaze of her own. When she speaks, her words are measured and definite. "But why do you care?"

"Why even bother to dig into the lives of my parents at all? Was it because I came here?"

Sure Zoe wishes to know more about her parents, but she was feeling particularly violated by knowing that someone who until recently was a complete stranger to her had been digging into her parents' lives and was unwilling to present any information he had. In what little dealings she and her packmates have had with him up to this point, she knew that there were things he was not telling her.

"If there is anything you know that will help me in my quest, I would appreciate you sharing said information with me. But speculations about my parents that suggest they had inappropriate dealings with spirits I am not interested in."

The older theurge shook his head. "Hears-the-Song, half-imagined speculation is all you will ever receive regarding your mother and father. Tycheros is nothing but a fondly recalled name. He has no deeds, no rank, and your mother might never have existed for all I can tell. I hesitate to use the word 'unprecedented,' but something strange is at work. If you wish to pursue this path, I will help you as best I can."

"As for why I want to help you, it nothing so complex or nefarious- I helped your packmates, if they would let me, and I want to help you. Take umbrage with that if you wish." His dark eyes twinkled, and then turned grave. "However, I am invested now for other reasons; I am concerned there is some malign force at work, a power strong enough to unmake a Garou as if he never existed."

After a short silence, a smile twitched at the corner of Malchizedek's mouth. "I find it comical that you think I have some hidden agenda, because it is no secret that I command spirit assassins through the umbra. My work is, by its very nature, secretive. What I have told you is in good faith- that I seek nothing less than victory over the Wyrm in the coming Apocalypse. Yet you still feel that I have been obfuscating matters?"

Zoe sighs and rubs the back of her neck as her face twists in confusion. She watches her pack mates enjoying their libations for a moment before turning back to Mal.

"It just - it doesn't make any sense. How does a Garou not have rank or deeds? And I have to have a mother...don't I? As far as I know Garou still have to reproduce naturally, don't they?"

Her mind drifts to Eaton, Mocks, and their pregnant kinfolk. She wonders momentarily if she will ever experience pregnancy firsthand.

Zoe's muscles tense slightly at his final question. "I did not say that I believed you to be 'obfuscating' matters. I am curious by nature and simply wish to obtain answers when questions come to my mind, especially when it concerns myself, my parents, or my pack. That being said..."

She looks up at the elder theurge and her eyes resemble that of the young orphan girl Raven more than those of the confident Garou warrior Hears-the-Song. "I would like your help finding answers about my parents."

The corners of Malchizedek's eyes creased into a deeper smile. "I agree it, it makes little sense- but I am under the impression that you are not some miraculous being that sprang into existence apropos of nothing. I believe you have parents, and someone or something has attempted to expunge all trace of them, though I know not why." As the theurge said these words, his voice took on a hard edge, as if admitting to a lack of understanding was physically painful.

"I wish to help. Like you, I hate to have my curiosity stymied, but we are searching for something that does not, apparently, exist."

The enigmatic Silent Strider shook his head and looked up at the night sky. Zoe could almost see the turning cogs in his shaggy head.

"How does one locate information with absolutely nothing to go on..." He stood still like that for a moment, his face peaceful as a death-mask. A night wind stirred, gently ruffling his robes and their hair. Suddenly Malchizedek started and looked at Zoe with a tight, self-assured grin.

"Now, perhaps- what if you should search for the absence of information instead. Seek out a burial place at your Caern- are there any empty tombs? Or a place of records and attempt to find some curiously missing... the absence of information may still be information in its own right...!"
