The Omen of Warning Empty
PostSubject: The Omen of Warning   The Omen of Warning EmptyFri 07 Mar 2014, 21:18

Zas B'ul had been on edge since the final meeting with the Get pack and the Prodigals leaving Perdido. He had not anticipated the response of the Get pack, but was not surprised by their attitudes. He now had come to a much better understanding of what Get of Fenris were truly like. His experience with his own family and the Uktena caern he had met his mentor at and the Ironrider and Children of Gaia caern in Nacodoches, as well as the Bonegnawer caern along the way of the Prodigals travels had opened his eyes to the vast differences between the Garou tribes.

He lingered on his thoughts of how difficult uniting each of them would be, but developed even further resolve to see it through. The various tribes may do things differently, but one thing they all had in common was that they were much more powerful when they worked together.

He had also witnessed first hand how powerful the servants of the Wyrm could be. One thing stood out clearly in his mind. If the Tribes of Gaia hope to thrive, they needed leadership and unity. The prodigals had fought well for they acted together. However, he needed to step up to the plate to ensure his packs continued survival...which meant among other things dealing with some concerning issues and holding people accountable.

Zas shook himself to focus, to contain his inner fury. He needed to be clearheaded before he did what he was about to do. After he was certain he had firm control of himself, he approached Eaton and asked for a word in private as the group continued their walk to Seguine.

When Eaton stepped away to meet with Zas, he could see a side of Zas he hadn't noticed before. Something seemed to be different.

Zas began, "My brother, I have much to say. I ask you to please take heed of what I bring to you. What I must say is not good. I do not accuse you or reprimand you rashly. I will not mince words any further. I have noticed much in our travels together. You are of great worth and breed and serve Gaia with the best of intent.

This however is not good enough. I have begun to notice a pattern in your actions. You do not have self-control. You throw yourself at our enemies without regard for your own life. In so doing, you also risk the lives and safety of our pack. This is not to continue. I will not stand idly by while our packmates fall due to your lack of control. When we arrived in Perdido you demonstrated this most grievously. Our foes were nowhere around, and you attempted to harm our pack. You may not remember this, but it is true. This can not go on. It ends here.

The safety of our pack however, is not the only issue. Your lack of control also prevents you from fulfilling Luna's calling to the best of your ability. How can our pack be represented among the Garou nation if our Galliard cannot recall our deeds? Our actions are what define us. Yours as of late do not serve you well.

I say all this to you in hopes that you will heed it for what it is. This is my one and only final warning to you. If any of this must be brought forth again, I will need to pronounce judgement upon you as is my calling."

The Omen of Warning Empty
PostSubject: Re: The Omen of Warning   The Omen of Warning EmptySat 08 Mar 2014, 20:35

As the entire pack continued on their way, Eaton wondered silently what lay ahead of them. While he wished Penelope had accepted Uncle McLeod's offering in joining his tribe, this still was her decision. He could only pray to Gaia that she made the right one. Plus, there was still a chance . . .

His musings were interrupting as Zas approached him, asking to speak in private. Eaton agreed, his brow furrowing slightly as he noticed just how uneasy he seemed. As their Philodox presented his view on Eaton's behavior, the Galliard faced away from him, though he still listened to every word. As Zas passed his judgment, Eaton had to supress a laugh. He turned in place so that he faced Zas, setting his staff quite forcefully on the ground,

"I dunno how you drew those conclusions, but I think for a philodox you are pretty damn imperceptive. Giving into my rage has allowed me to slay and triumph over our foes. You remember when I got torched defending the Cherokee? Considering how much it hurt like hell afterwards, I don't think I would have been able to rip those mockeries to shreds if I didn't give into my rage."

Eaton breathed deeply through his nostrils, "-and yes: I did willingly frenzy when Stern attacked the Caern. And yes, I didn't give a crap if I survived or not. And then remember how Zoe and I tore him apart? Why is this a bad thing, again?"

Before Zas could respond, he held up a finger and snarled "Yeah, the Wyrm wasn't breathing down our neck when I lost it at Perdido, but I was simply reacting to what I saw: Those creatures proved to have the power to provoke our anger; and I don't know if you've been paying attention, but to say I'm a threat to our pack with all these Wyrm-warped creeps trying to kill us strikes me as pretty back-asswards."

"Speaking of which, the Get, including Rends, completely lost it back there, too. You had a nice talk with them and that point never came up, so what makes me so special? You find it easier to talk down to the Bone-Gnawer?" He gave the Silent Strider a long, hard look. "Or were you just afraid of 'em?"

Eaton gritted his teeth as a half-growl rose from his throat, "I think I remember enough just fine. I know what went down in Perdido, even if I had to ask you, Zoe, or Mocks to fill in the details. If I don't do what I have to, then what do you think is gonna happen? If I'm dead, there's no one to tell the tales! Who are you to give this warning? I ain't sitting here telling you how to do your Gaia-given job, but now that I think about it, I don't remember anything in the litany forbidding us from using our rage. Hell, that is why Luna gave it to us in the first place!"

Eaton stepped closer, shoving his forefinger into Zas' chest, "If you think you can just tell me that I need to calm myself, that this is my "problem," well I've got news: It the situation calls for it, I'd rather forsake a few details of a campfire story than have our guts strewn across the ground."

The Omen of Warning Empty
PostSubject: Re: The Omen of Warning   The Omen of Warning EmptySat 08 Mar 2014, 22:07

Zas' body tensed. The hairs on his arms and neck rose quickly as his packmate continued his speech. His eyes flashed in anger as his rage began to boil just beneath the surface. He said nothing. He couldn't speak even if he'd wanted to. His face grew flush as he attempted to stifle what every other portion of his essence screamed out for him to do.

He couldn't talk. He tried to form words in his mouth but all he could visualize was the color red.
Then it struck him, like he'd been hit by a lightning bolt. He remembered his purpose and Gaia's calling overtook him. His senses returned. He re-focused himself, maintaining control.

He stepped forward into Eaton's finger forcing him to make it recoil back to his hand. He brought himself to an extremely intimate closeness to his packmates face.
Zas then said in an intense controlled tone, "I am this packs philodox. You agreed to that much when we first met. This is what gives me authority to say what I have said."

Zas plants himself firmly in the dirt before continuing, "Your actions have kept you alive thus far, but, only just. Our foes are powerful to which you can attest to, and you have done well in killing those we've faced thus far, however, you throwing yourself at them and trying to kill them on your own weakens our pack. I will not lose you to your own recklessness."

Zas then glares into Eaton's eyes, "Our rage is a tool given to us by Gaia. When used for its intended purposes it makes us powerful beyond compare. But it also makes us weak at the feet of our enemies. If it controls us rather than us controlling it we are but tools for the Wyrm to use. Every time you use your rage but lose control of it you are putting the lives of this pack at risk."

Zas face then softens slightly, "I do not talk down to you. I cannot talk down to you. I offer this as a means of building you and strengthening you up."

He is quiet for a moment before adding soberly, "You are correct though. I did not bring this to the Get pack. I hope that their own Philodox will see to this matter personally, but it is not my place to correct them unless their philodox neglects their duty. You are also correct in noting that I have not spoken to Rends the Gar. I have not done so yet, but I will, rest assured you can count on that."

Zas eyes then regain their intensity, "I am no coward though. If the Get of Fenris philodox fails in his duties, I will gladly bring the matter to their attention. The matter at hand though is your own actions. As I said, I have noticed this becoming a pattern. You have used your rage in the past when needed, but you do not have control of it. It controls you. Your lack of control is dangerous, as was seen in Perdido. It will not be tolerated. I am hoping that by you heeding this, you can continue to be the one that tells the campfire stories, with guts intact."

Despite Zas' tense tone, Eaton doesn't flinch as he gets in his face. He maintains his frown as his eyes grow narrower. As Zas finishes, he begins, "When have I ever faced our enemy alone? When have I attacked recklessly? To say it is dangerous ain't enough; The Wyrm has made sure were surrounded by constant threats. My frenzies have made sure they ain't a problem. And you still think I'm the greater liability? While I am the packs Galliard, I am also a child of Rat. He teaches that we must take advantage of every opportunity to defeat our foe. If the beast stirs within me, who am I to deny it?"

He points back to the pack but still keeps his gaze locked with Zas, "Though ain't it Rends who has led the charge more than once? Is he not the one who far more eager than I to tear our foes to shreds? And you know his rage glows hotter than mine."

Eaton takes a step back as a smirk briefly forms, "I think I see where the problem is: you think my frenzies are dangerous, ain't worth the risk, and should stop them entirely, but I think it's a cruel necessity."

A genuine smile appears on his face, but it seems viscous as he continues, "We can either settle this here, and you'll accept that my battle tactics are justifiable, or,"

His smile turns more understanding, as if he knows Zas will like what he hears next, "We can have a Philodox of a higher rank decide for us after we present our cases. If they decide in your favor, I will concede without question. And until we get our answer, I'll do my best to control myself."

Zas listens carefully to Eaton's response. His gaze remains unfaltered and unwavering.
He blinks once after Eaton finishes, having given him the two choices.

Zas then arches his back while straightening up and says, "I have already told you what this was to be. This is a warning. If you lose control of your rage again and attempt to harm the pack you will be punished. There is no discussion, there are no options, this is the line that will not be crossed. You will control yourself for the safety of the pack or there will be consequences."

Zas then returns Eaton's smile with one of his own and says, "No elder will ever tell you that it's okay to put your pack at risk. There is no justifiable reason or cause that is acceptable enough for that. I hope you see that."

Seeing how Zas treated his suggestion so dismissively, Eaton's smile disappears and is replaced with a grimace as he begins, "And I've already told you that I believe your warning is unfounded. If you don't wanna find out what an Elder has to say, than I'm challenging you: if I can best you in a quick duel, you'll lay off me. If you win, I accept whatever you say."

Eaton casts a quick gaze to the rest of the pack, to see what the rest are up to, before glancing back at Zas, "Does that seem unreasonable?"

Zas stares at Eaton for a long time saying nothing. He shakes his head and says, "I wished for this to be resolved privately between you and I. You however now challenge me publically and deman for immediate and summary judgement. You question the wisdom and advice I offer of protecting the pack by learning to control yourself. I have made my decision. You challenge it. You fail to see the danger in your own actions, and the unnecessary risk you bring to this pack in so doing. Yes, that does seen unreasonable."

Zas then turns to rest of the Profigals. "There is a matter that needs resolution here and now. You are to serve as witnesses to the outcome of this decision. The issue at hand is whether Leper-friends actions and tactics of losing control of his rage, thereby placing the pack at risk, are justifiable and reasonable. He has asked for this to be dealt with now by way of a duel."

Zas then turns back to Eaton and asks, "Will you please tell the pack the terms you have asked for? I agree to your terms."

Rends the Gar was deep in thought himself, distractedly munching on a leftover bit of venison from breakfast. He'd found that over the last couple of days his appetite had returned, and with it his full strength. That should have been comforting, but all he could really think about was his Tribe and the warning of his vision. At Zas' call he turned around, noticing the two half Injuns had fallen behind for the first time. He muttered a curse under his breath as he relayed the call up to the others.

Pay attention, dummy! Quit moppin' about and do yer job a' keepin' them alive!

Turning back to the two lagging behind, Rends approached them, eyes scanning the area around them.

"Cain't this wait till we're out of enemy territory? I'm pretty sure we's not bein' followed, but I'd rather not have two of ours healing up for the next few hours and leaving us weaker. What're y'all even fightin' about?"

He finished off the bit of meat, wiping his greasy fingers on his pants as he took a seat on an old tree stump and rested his rifle across his knees.

Hears-the-Song laughs when she hears Zas Bul's proclamation concerning the duel.

"That's what all this commotion is about? Eaton, you're wrong. Zas, you're right. No duel necessary."

Eaton's rage-filled glare only encourages Zoe to explain herself further.

"You may argue that your frenzied acts were successful and thus justified by the end result, but that is foolish and I attribute the success of your attacks and the safety of our pack to the ability of the rest of us to respond quickly when your actions become unpredictable, which is more often than not as of late."

"In our fight with Sterne, I was constantly having to watch my back to ensure that your attacks were directed at the enemy and not myself. And, yes, those Skin Rippers were scary as hell, but guess what, so are we. Next time, buck up and face your fears with your brain still intact."

Zoe nods to the ahroun.

"I agree with Rends. There is no need for you two to go at it in enemy territory when we have real enemies to fight. If I didn't know any better, Eaton, I'd think you were of the Get, the way you forget who our true enemies are."

Mocks stretches and meanders over to the rest of the group. He was trying to stay out of it, but Zoe's words rang wrong in his ears.
"Now now Zoe. Calm down. Ain't no need to be calling Eaton a Get of Fenris. After our latest run in with them that is just going too far. Besides this is between Zas and Eaton. They asked us to be witnesses, not to take sides. As a pack we have no alpha, so you have no place to decide who is right and who is wrong. We have duties to fulfill. Zas has a duty to uphold the litany. Eaton has challenged his ruling. Because this issue requires interpretation i believe he is allowed to. Should the challenge be a duel, and should it be settled here? If you ask me no. This is not the time or place, and we have other important matters to attend to. Such as getting Penelope down to Malkizadek. You have each said your peace. Perhaps take a day and think and reflect on what the other said.

Zas listens to the rest of the pack carefully. He then shakes his head at Mocks the night. "My brother, a decision on what to do must be reached now. We do not know what lies ahead of us on this road, and as such the safety of the pack is in question."
He then turns to Eaton and says, "As I stated earlier, I wanted to resolve this between you and I with mere words of wisdom-not bloodshed, as that would defeat the purpose of controlling yourself. I have given my warning, as intended. I have also agreed to a duel at your insistence, and if you wish we can have it here and now. I think the others do have a point though, that we are not in a position currently to have this duel safely, but I will not go back on my word. If you truly wish to shed blood over this, so be it.
However, you also suggested earlier that you would agree to the ruling of an elder Garou. We are currently in route to meet with one. Though I stand by what I said earlier about no elder likely ever agreeing to putting your pack at risk being an acceptable decision, if you wish to abide by their decision, so be it, I will do this as well. Though bear in mind that whatever their decision is, must be carried out, regardless of whether or not you like their judgement. The decision is yours."
Zas then drops his hands to his sides in a defensive posture, planting his feet firmly in the ground and entrenching himself as he awaits for a response.
He does not break eye contact, and concern is evident across his face, but his body is tense and prepared for battle if Eaton wishes to pursue this course of action.

Eaton continues staring Zoe down until she is finished speaking. Upon her conclusion, he begins, "This might sound strange to someone who hasn't been among the Garou that long, but this is how warriors of Gaia settle their little disputes. Bandying words is the way of humans, and I've had my fill of that. I got every right to challenge Zas' decision, and everyone else knows it."

Sparing Mocks a glance he says, "Thanks for understandin', but I think it's safe around here. We've been travelin' for days and seen nothing but rollin' hills and scrub oaks. And we haven't scented a whiff of skin rippers since the night in Perdido. I think we're well away from anythin' that might wanna kill us. So,"

He turns to face Zas, his eyes filled with resolve, "If ya wanna duel me, then so be it. I think even if we wait to take this before an elder, we'll have bitter feelings for one another the whole trip. I'd rather settle this here and now."

Eaton pointed to a nearby hill from the direction they came, "Up and over that hill would be a good spot. Just off the trail but ain't too far." He turned to Zas with a smile, "Let's go."

Rends sighed and got up from his stump.

"Welp, fine then. Let's get this over with. Give me and Penelope a few minutes to scout around and make sure they's no humans nearby first."

He hands his rifle to Mocks as he shifts into Lupus.

"Wait till we're back to start, if'n ya would. I don't wanna miss a good fight. And I wanna be there if somethin'... unfortunate happens."

He gives Eaton a glance before loping off into the underbrush, heading towards the indicated hill with Penelope running at his side.

Zoe stands nearby, her disapproval and annoyance abundantly clear in her crossed-arms posture.

"Just don't do anything foolish, either of you, because I don't have the spiritual strength to fix either one of you right now, not that I'd necessarily even want to, seeing as how all three of your pack mates advised against such ways to 'resolve' your differences."

As Rends and Penelope return, Zoe adds. "Honestly, I don't think this is going to prove anything anyway. Garou or not, just because you win a fight doesn't make you right. Is Rends always gonna be right when he disagrees with me just because he's a male Get ahroun and I'm a female Iron Rider theurge?"

Zoe sighs and shakes her head, shifting her hands to her pockets and fingering her watch in case things get out of hand.

The Omen of Warning Empty
PostSubject: Re: The Omen of Warning   The Omen of Warning EmptyMon 10 Mar 2014, 00:50

The sun rode high in the sky, banishing the shadows of the two Garou who stood facing each other in the middle of the tree-edged clearing. The terms were simple: wrestle or beat the other into submission, no gifts or supernatural weaponry allowed. The two duelists were to use only the strength and weapons Gaia had given her children. Both Eaton and Zas shifted into Crinos, their frail human bodies giving way to hulking monstrous forms in the warm noon sun.

A snarling roar issued from the Bone Gnawer, and he thundered across the small glade. Zas leaped to meet him and they collided, the Galliard's momentum serving him well as his shoulder cracked painfully into the chest of the darker-furred werewolf. Zas fell back onto the ground, scrabbling to get his claws around his opponent's throat, steeling himself against the lancing pain radiating from his shattered ribs. Eaton clambered forward, half-sitting, pinning the Philodox beneath him, before rearing up and lashing out with a savage right-hook. The blow caught Zas right across the chin, his tongue lolling out from between slack jaws as unconsciousness took him. Eaton placed his fangs around the comatose werewolf for a brief moment, but it was a purely symbolic gesture.

The challenge was over before the noon sun had moved from its zenith.

Mocks stands with the rest of his pack as the duel commences. His face full of annoyance first and then worry. There was no need for this, they had other things to do. He had other things to do such as writing a report for the Rangers. That thought flew from his mind as quickly as it came at the sound of the garou collision. His jaw drops as he scans the landscape for them. He spots them just in time to see Eaton knock the lights out of our esteemed philadox. He turns to Rends and the others.
"Is that it?" Mocks asks dumbfounded "you got room in your schedule to help Zas fight too? Maybe i am not the worst fighter anymore." He cracks a smirk and begins laughing, which turns into coughing and Mocks holding his chest with a grimace. He looks at the others and shrugs. "Sympathy pains." He gives another smile holding back his laughter this time.

At the end of the duel, Zoe rolls her eyes, walks over to Zas, and kneels down beside him. After ensuring the philodox's injuries are regenerating properly, she stands up and brushes off her pants. She turns to Eaton and smiles, but her eyes are stern.

"Way to go, Bone Gnawer! What an excellent demonstration of your ability to control your rage and not hurt your pack mates."

When Zas begins to regain consciousness, Zoe turns her back to the pack and starts back toward the path.

"Now that this is 'settled,' can we get back to the task at hand?"

She sighs, turns back, and her eyes soften toward Eaton.

"Look...we're all gonna be in deep trouble if we can't work together as a team. I personally think this duel was pointless, but if it allows you two to work together again, then it served some purpose after all. Could we please just put this behind us and move forward?"

Eaton released his grip on his packmate and stood up. He snapped back to homid form and rubbed his shoulder as he gave a smug smile to Zoe, "I'd say it was: if I really wanted to mess 'em up he'd be lyin' there for a very long time. I hope I showed you all that I can control myself; I ain't frenzyin' for fun. And I did offer 'em another way to settle this; he knew the risks of acceptin' my terms."

As Zas awoke, Eaton extends his hand to help him up as he says, "Don't think I challenged your judgment so easily, it ain't like I wasn't listenin'. Even if I don't have to accept your warnin', I've heard y'alls concerns." He smiles as he finishes, "And I'll definitely keep 'em in mind."

Zas' eyes flutter open. He lets out a low growl as he slowly starts to sit up. As Eaton extends his hand Zas accepts it and with effort pulls himself back up from the dirt. He reaches up and snaps his jaw back into place with a grimace. His ribs begin to finally settle into their original position and stop cracking.
Zas then returns to his homid form and looks to the rest of the pack. He calls out to Zoe as she has started to walk away, "Hears-the-Song, please look this way. As a witness you need to see and hear all of this."

He then turns to the rest of the pack and says, "Gaia has sided with Leper-friend. His actions were justifiable and none may say differently."

Zas then turns to Eaton and says stoically, "You fought well. I pray that Gaia continues to use you for her purposes. You should know however, that though you losing control of your rage lately has been deemed by Gaia as acceptableable, this does not make it right. The risks to this pack are still there, and as such my warning to you still stands. If you should in your fits of rage, lose control and harm a packmate, before Gaia, and all those present here, I will personally serve you your judgement as you have been informed of the risks and have chosen to continue down this path. However, provided you can focus your rage, if not outrightcontrol it, I will say nothing against you further, as per your terms of the duel. This is the last I will speak of this matter."

Zas then grasps his arm tightly and pulls it in close to his chest and takes his other arm and wraps it around his shoulder in a manly hug as he says, "Thank you for hearing my words. Thank you for doing what you have done to save this pack in the past. Please remember our purpose and who our enemies are."

Zas then releases him and turns back to the pack. He then looks at Rends-The-Gar and says, "May I have a word?"

Rends had watched the fight with quiet intensity, wound up like a spring for the quick bout. His intense gaze followed Eaton as he left the hilltop, and Rends finally relaxed as Zas approached him. He turned to his packmate, nodding to him.

"Sure. But if it's trainin' you want, now ain't the time. I have been thinkin' Mocks could use a sparrin' partner about his skill level though."

His voice didn't carry any humor in it, and his eyes were sincere.

The Omen of Warning Empty
PostSubject: Re: The Omen of Warning   The Omen of Warning EmptyMon 10 Mar 2014, 21:50

Zas begins to walk away from the hilltop, returning back to the road to continue the pack's journey to Seguine.

He says to Rends, "Thank you, but I'm not really in the best shape to fight anyone else at the moment, for training purposes or otherwise."

He takes a deep breath and reflects on recent events before turning to face Rends and asking, "Do you enjoy being an Ahroun? How do you feel when you are able to serve as gaia's teeth and claw and fist? Are you happy?"

He then looks down at the ground and picks up a small rock and begins tossing it nonchalantly in the air and catching it as he continues.
"The reason I ask, is because out of all of us here, you above anyone seem to always be certain and sure of your actions and choices. This is not a bad thing. I am just truly interested in how you come to the choices you make so seemingly quickly."

Rends slings his rifle over his shoulder as he walks alongside Zas.

"Way I see it, ain't nothin' to it. The right thing is the right thing, and talkin' about it don't change nothing. It ain't in me to stand around and wait, seein' what everyone thinks before I do something. I see what has to be done, and I do it. Tha's all they is to it."

His hand drifts down to his belt, where his fetish knife hangs by a leather thing.

"Course, I been thinkin' recently that maybe they's more to it than jest goin' places and killin' stuff."

He chews on his tongue for a long moment, considering his next words.

"I seen the way my Tribe was before, when I got to Galveston. Reminded me o' my pa. Too eager to take what he couldn't hold, too greedy to do anything worthwhile. Too eager to kill or scare off potential allies cuz they was showed weakness for a second. It destroyed my Pa, and I can see my Tribe has to fight themselves as much as they fight anyone else to keep theyselves in check. I don't like it. I'm better than that. The Get are better than that."

He spat to the side, adjusting his hat to block the sun as they rounded a bend in the deer trail. He turned to look at Zas, eager fire burning in his eyes.

"But ya. I like bein' Ahroun. Feels right. Like I got purpose. I was always gettin' in fights when I was a kid, but now I fight for somethin'. Feels good."

Zas nods along as Rends explains himself. Grunting when he deemed appropriate. When Rends finished speaking Zas said nothing for a few paces. He simply stopped tossing the rock and began rubbing his thumb into it in a circular motion.
"I have not been very good about stating how I feel and what I intend to do lately. I have let the differences between our two societies, white man and Indian, hold too much sway in how I handle the stones we stumble across in our path. My action or rather inaction has caused trouble to grow within our pack. I have not done what is right quick enough. For that I apologize."

Zas goes quiet for several more minutes. His thumb beginning to just barely wear into the pebble from the consistent motion.
"Our path, yours and mine has not been easy has it?"

Rends stops, facing Zas as he speaks. He nodds once as the Indian finishes.

"Nope. But I wouldn't have it any other way. I don't want somethin' if it's jest given to me. If I don't earn it, it ain't really mine. But that's jest how life is."

He remains quiet for a moment, then scratches awkwardly at the back of his neck.

"Don't tell the others I said this, but I reckon I got you wrong first time we met. I thought you was jest another lazy Injun lookin' for handouts from your betters. But today you proved you's willin' to do what's right even when those close to you say it ain't. I can respect that. Servin' Gaia ain't always about winnin'; sometimes it's about doin' what's right and spittin' in the eye of those who say it ain't. And sometimes it's about jest bringing somethin' up what needs sayin' even if it don't go nowhere right away."

He spits over to the side, starting off again down the trail.

"I seen what losing yourself to Rage can do to a man. I don't want that for me or mine. But some folk gotta learn the hard way."

Zas acknowledges his packmate and his words with a gruff nod. The two travel on in silence for a while. Zas then stops walking, takes the pebble he'd been working on, and skips it away several feet.

He then turns to Rends and says, "You have proved yourself in war. You have proved yourself in peace. The question remains, have you proved yourself in you?"

Before Rends is able to give him a strange glance or look, he continues, "The foes we faced most recently, these skin rippers, were powerful. They were able to somehow provoke our anger by merely seeing them. Tell me truthfully, were you able to maintain control of yourself when standing before and gazing upon the faces of our foes?"
