Where Silent Striders Lie Empty
PostSubject: Where Silent Striders Lie   Where Silent Striders Lie EmptyThu 08 Sep 2016, 18:24

As the pack waited for nightfall outside New Zion Kefka approached the Philadox.

"It's been awhile since we've been together as a pack. Feels like things are finally back to normal. Where did you disappear to after Houston?"

Where Silent Striders Lie Empty
PostSubject: Re: Where Silent Striders Lie   Where Silent Striders Lie EmptyThu 08 Sep 2016, 22:16

The Silent Strider looked onwards towards the settlement and then back to the distant plains the pack had trekked across before turning to face his packmate. He takes in a deep breath as a gentle breeze blows through the area.

"I agree with you. It feels like we are each a part of some bigger mysterious puzzle and the pieces only seem to make the most sense when we come together."

The Philodox rubs his back against a nearby mesquite tree to reach some hidden itch as he replied. "Disappeared...huh, that's an interesting way to put it-not necessarily an incorrect description but interesting."

He leans forwards and says with a serious expression, his eyes hiding a glimmer of hope, "In a way you might say I died."

Zas B'ul pops his neck as he continues. "After things had settled down in Houston and we had seen to the successful transition of the Forked Ash, I tried to make the most of my travels. I know you and Rends were set to help bring your kin down from Nacogdoches, as was Zoe, and I figured Eaton would likely try to see to raising his child. As I have no such familial ties however, I sought out a different type of family."

He thinks for a moment as he says, "I initially intended to try and just soak up all the information I could about my tribe. I figured there may be some helpful tribal wisdom hidden in Wepauwet's lair."

The quiet philodox smiled, "I wasn't wrong, but the information I got was not what I was expecting. I died in the sense that I was made to realize how dead wrong it was for my family to distance itself from the rest of the tribe and how empty my life had been without knowledge of my tribe."

He tilted his head and said, "In a way, my own excursion was similar to when we traveled to the mountain and you spoke with Grandfather Thunder and learned a little about the worthiness of your cause."

Zas folded his hands together as he says, "I learned some things about myself, my place in Gaia's plan as well as how to better serve the pack: namely that being a philodox is about more than simply telling the truth, and that the truth is not as black and white as I might wish to see it sometimes."

After his momentary reflection, Zas looks up at Kefka and says, "I guess you could say I found the part of me that I didn't know was missing and in so doing, I found a bit of personal peace."

As he says this his gaze drifts off to the north and he adds, "-which I feel will likely be of great use and value in coming days."

His focus shifts back to the present as he says, "What about yourself? Any progress on the homefront with the family?" He pauses, "Or news of Masks?"

Where Silent Striders Lie Empty
PostSubject: Re: Where Silent Striders Lie   Where Silent Striders Lie EmptyThu 08 Sep 2016, 23:05

Mocks nodded silently as Zas spoke.

"I'm glad to hear you have found yourself. Personal growth is a necessity, especially with what we know lies before us."

He stares off in the distance and frowns as Zas brings up the talk of the Masks.

" Concerning Masks I know Nightclaw wasn't one. During the relocation to the now Forked Ash caern I stumbled across Nightclaw's personal journal. There is a passage written about his distrust of Illyanna. He assumed she was a Mask sent for him, or one of Margrave's hounds. I'm not certain what to make of it besides the fact he was not a Mask."

He sighs.

"It's a shame that things had to end for him the way they did. He tried protecting the caern in his own fashion, I see that now. I am uncertain if we Shadowlords are meant to lead. A cruel twist of fate. Nightclaw did terrible things, made wrong choices, but he did them with good intentions. You others stay in the light more than we gamble and take risks in the dark."

He sits down and takes a swig from his flask. He motions for Zas to sit and offers him a drink.

"In the journal Nightclaw also speaks of the Necromantis. I long to go West and deal with him. It's the one loose end from Houston that I feel wrapping around my neck. I'm concerned about the deal we made. What if we don't find a Camazotz? We may need to use the fetish Illyanna had...if we could find the ritual anyway."

"I'll offer my son to him. If we don't find a Camazotz... I don't know any other way to prove I'm earnest. He's only kin... By doing this he could do more for the nation than other kin could dream of... He may hate and resent me for it...Harriet too... But we promised the Necromantis we would find him a Camazotz."

Kefka reaches for his flask, thirsty for a drink.

PostSubject: Re: Where Silent Striders Lie   Where Silent Striders Lie EmptyFri 09 Sep 2016, 00:03

The Silent Strider listens and asks when his packmate took a breath, "Who or what is a Margrave? Do we know this person or spirit?"

At Mocks' acknowledging Nightclaw's intentions, Zas's smile fades. "I am glad you see this death in this light. If you recall, I too shared a similar bit of remorse upon the completion of the punishment rite. I also understand your uncertainty about taking up the mantle of leadership....and that of having good intentions."

The apache forms a fist and hammers it into his palm as he says, "My decision to trust that an alliance with a ghost would end well and that perhaps in so doing help Hanging Maw to serve Gaia was made with the best of intentions. I learned that lesson well."

He accepts the offered flask and takes a sip, taking a short breath as the liquid slid down his throat and he likewise sits.

Zas looks back in the direction of the west and says, "I had considered the possibility of us not finding a Camazotz as well..."

The philodox attention immediately reverts back to his packmate as Mocks shares his plan, and a look of horror washes over Zas's face for a moment. He takes another long sip of the flask and stares back to the west in silence as his face returns to a more passive expression.

"I see."

He hands the flask back to his packmate, "I sincerely hope it does not come to this. I know that you would try and search down every possible lead on this before resorting to such a measure as any child born with wolf blood, even if they are not able to shift, is still a valuable treasure; though it may not be as well received by others however, I understand your reasoning and admire your resolve in this."

The Silent Strider looks down at his feet as he adds, "I am learning what the meaning of true sacrifice is..."

Deadhands looks back to Kefka and adds, "That is the price of leadership and where the steward of the White Ash caern failed in the King's period of grief."

PostSubject: Re: Where Silent Striders Lie   Where Silent Striders Lie EmptyFri 09 Sep 2016, 00:57

Kefka tilts his head to look at Zas and grimaces.

"If sacrifices had been made sooner, many Garou would not have had to sacrifice their lives in the Battle of Houston."

He takes a drink from his flask.

"Unfortunately I don't know who or what this Margrave. We all have our own demons we fear will come for us. For all we know we were the hounds that brought justice down upon him."

He smiles and stifles a chuckle.

"It is hard to become master of one's own fate. I hope Moronai can find the pleasure in that freedom. New Zion ought to be fine without him though. Omega enhanced people's ambitions but he didn't create it out of nothing so it will still be there just not to the same degree. New Zion will slow down and move at the pace of others towns and cities, which in all honesty is probably for the best. "

His smile fades.

"I worry Drowns His Foes will bring ill tidings, although with a name like his anything but would be out of the ordinary. It will be good to see him though. It has been since Jasnah's birth since we last spoke, considering we never got to meet at the White Ash as planned."

He turns to Zas.

"Why do we plan things? Is it to keep the illusion we still have some control over our lives? Perhaps it is to stave off the ever encroaching despair with temporary peace and confidence. All our planning in Houston and we still lost the caern, lost Garou. All the planning, and scheming Mal is doing is it worth it? He is building a tomb where he can hide and die slowly. Our best successes have been spur of the moment and reactionary. Learning to adapt to whatever hand is dealt to us is time better spent than planning what to do with a perfect hand."

Where Silent Striders Lie Empty
PostSubject: Re: Where Silent Striders Lie   Where Silent Striders Lie EmptyFri 09 Sep 2016, 02:29

At his friends more somber tone and recalling of fallen heroes, Zas simply nods his head in agreement.

Upon Kefka's statement and subsequent thoughts of the Margrave, the Silent Strider rubs his chin, "I am done running from demons-that time is over. If I were to hold on to every regret in life, I would only slow myself down. This is something I think can be learned from the Red Talons."

The philodox grunts in acknowledgment about New Zion. "Agreed. Too much growth too quickly can be dangerous."

Zas looks to Kefka and says with a sigh, "Now that I know what he looks like, and what you have told me about him, I am very interested to hear what Drowns-his-foes has to say on several matters."

His gaze lingers on Mocks for a long period of time as his pack mate asks some interesting questions.

Zas then looks up at the sky, "Malchizadek is doing what he needs to do by preparing for the last battle in this war. He's shoring up the defenses and stockpiling an armory that is currently out of the full clutches of the wyrm so that when the final battle comes we can destroy the wyrm once and for all by bringing all our forces to bear. He is fulfilling the duties of a warder...perhaps the duties of the last and final warder. We are in this war to win it-no matter what."

Zas takes a breath, "You ask why we plan? We plan because we have an enemy who is methodical and strikes intentionally. We are called by Gaia to fight. We don't rely solely on our claws and fangs to win the day. We use everything at our disposal. We have been given the ability to think and strategize for a reason."

He pauses, "We did not lose the caern to the enemy. Our warriors died because they were fulfilling their duty to protect the sacred space and to fight the enemy where it dwells. Had we gone into Houston blindly without any information or back up and tried to take out everything ourselves we all would likely have died and the White Ash sept would have undoubtedly succumbed to the depredations of the foul Jose Miracle and the witches we didn't kill.
Adapting to what happens is a survival skill, but let me ask you, what is surviving without purpose? Are we then not any better than ghosts?"

Zas gives Mocks a firm hand on the shoulder, "We fight for a cause that is not only righteous brother, but one that is a divine calling. Our ultimate purpose is to fight-we are warriors. We fight this war, no matter the consequences, no matter the losses, no matter the pain because we were built to fight it. We fight til we achieve victory or death."

He gives a grim nod, "That's why."

Kefka chuckles.

"Victory? Death is more likely. There are dangers in every direction."

He spits.

"If complete victory was even possible what would it look like? What purpose would we even have if there is no threat of Wyrm?

He looks at the clouds passing by in the sky for a few moments before turning to Zas.

"Would you be able to go back to your life before you first changed? Could you fake it as a mere human and live out the rest of your life?"

He cocks his head to the side.

"I think death is the kinder option out of the two."

At Kefka's grim response, Zas leans back resting on his hands.

He contemplates for a moment before speaking, "I don't feel it is my place to question the future. There's so much happening in the moment that thinking about hypothetical and what if's would just wear me out. Maybe this is why Gaia saw fit to bestow the duty of questioning things to your auspice."

The philodox looks forwards and says, "I hope you're not expecting me to disagree with you that death would be kinder to us than living without having a reason to fight. But then again, I don't think we should ever deny who we are."

Zas turns to his pack beta and says, "Look Mocks, I will be the first to tell you that I don't have all the answers...Rends may try and beat me to it, but nevertheless the point remains. Now I'm glad to share an opinion on how I hope things work out, and I will happily bore you to confusion with old strange 'injun' anecdotes and stories that you could potentially find wisdom in, but, I'm just a friend. I don't have some all knowing gift that tells me what right path to go down to find the answers we're looking for. I'm just making it up as we go. Maybe that's how our totem spirit Coyote wants us to be, I don't know."

He rubs his chin, "What I do know is this: Life is hard, messy and complicated, and at the end, everyone dies. My job is to sort through the mess and try and keep the pack on the right trail until we meet our end. If I do my job well, we will save Gaia. But that's just me. I can't tell you what to do, save when it comes to the litany and even then, only just."

He pauses, "It seems to me though, that all this boils down to something that I can't speak to: whether or not you are okay with giving up your child as payment for long remembered tribal misdeeds. That's a tough decision that only you can make, but its consequences are something you're gonna have to live with. I don't think any amount of fire water or self inflicted berating is gonna help soothe the pain of that. All I can say to this is that no matter what route you choose-your pack has your back."

Kefka turns to Zas and forces a smile.

"I am thankful for you all having my back, and for you in particular listening to my troubles."

He takes a drink.

"I am at loss of what to do and it is taking it's toll on my mind. With any luck more knowledge will be revealed before the decision must be reached. For now muddling my mind with firewater is the best I can do, to keep from planning and focusing on the worst."

He sighs.

"I hate that I even thought of it as a solution. Harriet would be so disappointed in me. With any luck though... she'll never have to know."

Kefka is silent for a while before speaking up again.

"When are you going to break down and have a kid or two. You're the only one of us who ain't actively trying to extend your legacy."

Where Silent Striders Lie Empty
PostSubject: Re: Where Silent Striders Lie   Where Silent Striders Lie EmptyThu 15 Sep 2016, 16:08

The normally stoic exterior of the Silent Strider begins to falter before shattering completely at the question regarding family.

"H--hey now, this was about you..."

Its easy to see the words seem to have struck some sort of nerve, as the smile on the Philodox instantly fades.
Zas growing painfully quiet as he seems to be chewing on the question.

He looks up at one point and seems as if he's about to say something, but then hangs his head again.

The quiet garou begins to pick at the grass in front of him.

After an awkwardly long stretch of time passes, Zas turns to face Mocks, his eyes telling far more of his internal pain and anguish than his words, "I don't know that I can."

Kefka stared at Zas during the awkward silence waiting for a response, his face getting more confused by the moment, and ending on shocked after the revelation. He opened his mouth to respond and then closed it. He turned away to gather his thoughts. After a couple of moments he turned back to Zas.

"I'm sorry."

He paused, trying to hide his confusion.

"I don't mean to be rude...or pry... But have you actually tried to have kids?"

The Philodox takes a long drawn out breath and closes his eyes.

With a moment of pained concentration, his brow furrowed, Zas says, "You have no idea how much I envy you all...how lonely it gets sometimes; How weak I feel when the thoughts come back to haunt me like some twisted spectre."

His voice nearly breaks, but he clears his throat as he struggles to say, "I-I would love to be a father, you can't imagine how high that would make me soar. Seeing the joy each of your families bring to you when we return from a long journey, how much care and devotion the rest of the pack gives to their loved ones--just watching the children's first steps, hearing their cries and being able to soothe them to sleep...."
His words fade.

The Apache after a moment has a bittersweet smile begin to form, "When you told me that I was always welcome in your house and company and also offered a meal, I meant what I said about it meaning a lot; but at the same moment in time I also felt a sea of jealousy flood my senses as I wanted to be You more than anything."

Zas reclined out on the ground as thoughts began to fill his head, still retaining the smile but his features seemed to betray his air of peace he was trying to give, "In response to your question about whether I have tried to have kids or not-the answer is yes."

He takes a breath, opening his eyes to look at the sky, "You were all there when I met the hooker courtesy of Rends, but since we have been a pack there has only been one other woman. She and I were 'together' quite often."

The Silent Strider turns to face Mocks and says, "She flew back to Vinegaroon and I haven't stopped thinking about her since."

Mocks listens with wide eyes and open ears as Zas responds,

"Ah Zas... If I knew it would have made you jealous I never would have welcomed you into my house."

He stifles a chuckle as he continues.

"I remember the hooker in Natchatoches...have you gone back to see her? How can you be certain you don't have a kid out there? I mean babies aren't automatic man... you got to have stars align. Jasnah didn't spring forth after one romp with Harriett I'll tell you that much..."

At the mention of Ebony Mocks frowned.

"Huhn... I knew y'all two were close but I didn't know it was like that."

He opens his mouth to speak and then closes it. He takes a large swig from his flask.

"Now I don't know the litany like you do, that ain't my job...but is it allowed to be with another changing breed? I mean if a garou is with a garou a Metis is born.... What would happen if she did have a kid? Can she even have a garou kid? Would it even be a garou...or an abomination? That sounds dangerous man. She left though too... She could have left with your child without you knowing."

He paused.

"Look all I am saying is you can't say for certain whether or not you can have kids, so if you want a family...go for it. Just try and do it the right way... You know. Marry a kin."

Zas looks away as Mocks takes his drink.
"You are right about the litany. But I am quite certain there's no rules against our kinds being together. Regardless though were a child to be born-it would not matter to me if it was Garou or Kin or if it turned out to be coral...the point is that it would be my child."

He sits up as he considers the rest of his Ragabash's words. "You're right. She did leave. As to whether or not she could have a garou kid-I honestly don't know; which is kinda why I'm not sure whether or not I can have kids."

Zas forces a half hearted smile, "I can't predict the future-and I really don't want to give up on the past. I think I love her Mocks...maybe I'm dumb or trying to make what we had into something more, but it's how I feel."

The Silent Strider hangs his head, "Besides-there's probably no woman out there who'd want to be with me anyhow. She'd be looked upon as an outcast to both the pure nation and the garou nation, on top of the fact that I am not a whiteman. That's half of what makes Ebony and Me work."

Zas looks back to his friend, "Just admit it man, If Ebony and I don't work out-the odds of me finding a wife willing to ignore everything and raising a family and settling somewhere are slim to none. Probably just best for everyone if I just stayed on the road and was Jasnah and your son's distant creepy Injun uncle."

Mocks sighed.

"You will always be welcome in my house Zas with or without a family. Just because you ain't found Ebony to get along with don't mean that you won't find anyone else. You say that no woman would want you, but i would imagine there are plenty of woman out there who would choose you over Rends, Eaton, or dare I say even myself. You have a relationship with Uktena and wendigo that we will never know. You could choose a kin from either of heir tribes under the guise of peace talks, and negotiations. Love can be nurtured and found even when originally there is none."

Mocks gave Zas a reassuring smile.

"Or if you rather we can look for Ebony when we go out West."

At his latter comment Zas smiles, "I think seeing her again would certainly help."

"Wild cards? It's hard to say. We certainly are still unpredictable, but we also get results. So...yes we are wild cards. Very reliable wild cards."

He smiled.

"We've come a long way from when we all met in Nacogdoches. Even you and Rends seem to get along occasionally."

He chuckled.

"We were only wild cards back then...but we have grown. We have succeeded time and time again, and we've made allies almost everywhere we have gone, Garou and non-Garou alike. It's an uphill battle when we meet new people, but that stigma leaves once they see our mettle for themselves."

Zas purses his lips together as he hears our Kefka's response.
"You remember what I said when I looked North through Meronis tool?"

The philodox sighs, "We've got a lot riding on what's to be found out west. That said, I personally got to try and figure out something good and powerful to face what's coming from the north. That war has got to be prevented Mocks. If I can't stop the red man and the white man from fighting, at the very least I've got to stop garou from killing one another if there's a remote chance of the tribe's coming together."

The Apache looks to his packmate, "I don't think Scents the lies is a typical Wendigo. His tutelage has been invaluable. But, when I made my bow and traveled north-the very land was opposed to me. I'm not certain the Wendigo will give us the time we need to show our mettle to them....worse still, I'm not sure we're going to have the time to do it anyway."

He displays a grim look of concern as he continues, "I ask if you consider us to be wild cards because honestly that's kinda what I think is going to be needed if there's a chance for war to be averted between the garou nations."

Zas looks down, "I'm sorry to burden you with my thoughts on this but, I know that you are able to see flaws in things and in so doing find solutions. So I must ask, do you see any flaws in my desire to bring the tribes together?"

Kefka grimaces and shrugs his shoulders.

"We've got the mosquito spirits that we are holding for the Wendigo, and will return them first opportunity we get...That has to count for something in our favor before they meet the rest of us."

He laid back and stretched out on the ground, staring at the cloudy sky above them.

"I don't see a flaw in your desire to unite the tribes. It's a noble, and just cause you fight for...I see a flaw in us. All of us who walk Gaia's plain are flawed in some way or another and it just takes the flaws of one to destroy your dream."

He paused and a raised a fist in the air. He stuck his thumb out

"A misplaced show of pride, can be seen as arrogance."

He unfurled his pointer finger.

"An statement made in jest, could cause serious offense."

He unfurled his middle finger.

"A favorable disposition for the Weaver, could be seen as a slight against Gaia."

He unfurled his ring finger.

"A different interpretation of the Litany, could be seen as an act of treason."

He unfurled his pinky finger.

"A favored tale to tell, could be remembered quite differently."

He turned his head to look at Zas.

"Any one of us could cause your plan to fail. Not because the plan is flawed...but because we are flawed, and so are they."

PostSubject: Re: Where Silent Striders Lie   Where Silent Striders Lie EmptyWed 21 Sep 2016, 01:30

Zas pondered the words awhile, his mind a flurish of spinning dizzying cogs as he worked to apply this insight to himself.

Meanwhile his outward expression remained nearly motionless.

It was after an extended length of time that the philodox smiled and imitating his packmate laid his head down with his gaze looking skyward.

His eyes have a faraway look to them "It is a dream...yes, a far flung dream indeed. A vision I hope I don't get woken up from. Can you imagine a world where all the tribes stand as one?"

His sight returns to normal, "Yes, the spirit mosquitoes will hopefully be well received."

His smile leaves him and in its place comes a forlorn expression, "The tiniest softest whisper is all it takes to snuff out the flickering ember of hope-..."

His words become sharp and his voice begins to gain a bit of an edge as he says, "That's what we need Mocks the Night. We need to show them the cleft in the rock-a place where hope grows. We need to show the Wendigo who we really are as individuals but even more so as a pack."

He pauses, "We have had our mettle tested and grown stronger for it. We have overcome differences. This ordeal with the Necromantis-that is our next proving ground-where we hone and refine our skills. The redemption of Bat will be the greatest honoring tribute possible that you could offer to your ancestors. That's how we will win."

Where Silent Striders Lie Empty

Mocks grimaced.

"I just hope I'm up to the task...that we are up to the task. Redeeming Bat is quite literally a different beast than what we usually deal with. The pay off will be huge...but the risk, and cost are also great."

Mocks turned away and was silent for awhile before speaking.

"In what ways are the Wendigo different from the Uktena? I have not had the good fortune to meet any Wendigo, so I am not sure what to expect if we are at peace, or war."

Where Silent Striders Lie Empty

The philodox gave a conflicted sigh as he considered the question placed before him.

"Now that's a difficult question to answer. I don't know that I can give a proper response, but I can share of my encounters."

He strokes his chin as he says, "To understand the Wendigo is not an easy thing. Perhaps it would be better for me to tell you first who they are."

He angles his head as he recalls his experiences, "From what I have been able to learn, the pure lands belonged to three tribes. They refer to themselves as brothers. The Uktena were the elder brother, the Croatan the middle brother, and the Wendigo the youngest."

Zas closes his eyes, "When the Croatan made their sacrifice, it hurt the brothers deeply. They seemed to react to this pain in different ways.
You have dealt with the Uktena enough to know that they value secrets, and hidden wisdom. Their pursuit of the darker knowledge in how to fight the wyrm comes from the pain they felt due to losing their brother. However, they see the tribes of the wyrmcomers as potentially having untapped secrets and have thus not completely ceased talking."

The Silent Strider opens his eyes as he says, "The Wendigo reacted differently. They tend see the loss of their brother and blame the wyrmcomers for bringing the wyrm to their land, holding all white men responsible for this. The biting and painful cold that their totem thrives in is unforgiving, they too I fear share this trait."

The philodox smiles, "Not all of them feel this way necessarily...and perhaps I am completely mistaken in my understanding as the only Wendigo I have met is Scents the Lies, but my interpretation of his words seem to paint this picture."

Zas nods to the north, "The bulk of the tribe seems to remain in the cold north where they are away from the rest of the garou. Their lands are just that...theirs, and they are fiercely protective of their space. They do not yield, bend, or compromise their ways. Making an enemy of them marks you for death- My own mentor hunted down and killed a pack of black Spirals by himself when they made the mistake of thinking that leaving Wendigo territory meant the Wendigo would let them escape justice."

The philodox shudders as he adds, "My trip north in crafting my bow revealed that even their tribal spirits did not take very kindly to me because I was an intruder-a welcomed one, but an intruder all the same."

The Silent Strider pauses to collect his thoughts before continuing, "The cold lands have a way of re-prioritizing what's important, shaping perspective to not wasting time. When I was there, I found my inner fury soothing as the warmth of it seemed to be all that kept me from freezing."

Zas turns to face Kefka, "Now that I think about it, the tribe seems like it would share a few traits with the Get of Fenris...but perhaps one distinguishing feature is that I am told that Wendigo are often by themselves, going long periods without seeing or being with their pack."

He smiles, "However you asked how the Wendigo were different from the Uktena."

He pauses, "The Uktena will attack you with powerful spirit magic. They will anticipate your moves and beat you sometimes without you ever seeing them. They are precise and deliberate in how and when they decide to come for you. They will likely attack you in a way you didn't see coming."

Zas gives a darker grin, "The Wendigo will wear you down. They will have you begging for death to escape the unforgiving cold and gnawing pangs of hunger and desperation. They will attack with cunning by isolating you from allies and resources to weaken you and then go in for the kill. They also are relentless and will not stop if you flee from them. When they strike, the assault is total devastation-they will kill everyone and everything."

He chuckles, "I have never even met one of their Ahroun-that's all I noted from just one of the tribes old philodox."

His laugh quickly dies off, "...and now you know, why I am wanting to prevent a garou war and unite the tribes."

Zas looks away, "Did that answer your question?"
