Vernal Equinox: The Honor Pits Empty
PostSubject: Vernal Equinox: The Honor Pits   Vernal Equinox: The Honor Pits EmptySun 06 Sep 2015, 14:50

Mocks-the-Night and Rends-the-Gar stood on the edge of the ring of hills surrounding the ancient glen, gazing towards the west. Hazy, translucent clouds meandered through the cool stars as they sparked to life, though Luna had yet to show her face. Torches lit a clearing before them, illuminating a growing crowd gathering around a scattering of deep, yawning rectangular holes. The opening notes of the first Chants of Challenge rose in the night, as Get of Fenris called one another to combat, howling their words in the savage First Tongue. As they drew near, the two Prodigals realized they knew many of the Garou here, at least in passing; nearly all had all fought in Akna's blighted lair. Isolde and her Greyfrost wolves were goading some of Robert's Red Tide, needling them about their absent alpha. Three of the hulking Steel Reavers were there, making a warlike cacophony as they hammered their gauntleted claws against rune-etched breastplates. A cruel looking Dragon Slayer discussed terms of challenge with Erik Warbreath of the Throat-Tearers, their words traded over a great empty grave. Around the Get of Fenris was a small crowd of onlookers, kinfolk ready to see the brutal action, as well as Bone Gnawers of the Marrow Lords and the Chainbreakers. The Swarm's attentive, cunning eyes were the color of blood in the firelight. Some were drinking, but most were merely watching... for now. Raises-All-Hell and that loudmouth from earlier, Gnash, were in attendance. Few of the Tonkawa Uktena were present, with one notable exception: Chief Can't-Be-Killed, stood on the slope of the hill, wrapped in a hide robe, his face a placid mask.

A deep, ululating howl rang out, silencing all others for a moment. Aedfang 'Kills-All-Night,' walked into the torchlight, his heavy spiked polearm clutched in a gnarled claw. "We are here for one purpose. Fight for honor and glory. The terms are simple. Take not the lives of your brothers or sisters, and confine your strife to the challenge pits. Lose yourself to your rage, and I will show you what true fury looks like." The Bastard Judge growled his words, wet flecks of spittle gathering at the corners of his fanged mouth. "May Mad Luna and Great Fenris smile on you." He howled, long and loud into the night, his cry joined by the gathered Garou and kin.

Kefka turns to Rends and grins. He takes a swig from his flask before tossing it to Rends.

"Take care of that for me will ya? I'm going to go get my ass kicked."

He laughs as he runs off into the other Garou searching for a particular opponent. He saw SpineBreaker lazily watching the fights in his usual Hispo form. Mocks draws a deep breath as he approaches the Garou that nearly killed him a little over a year ago. He grins.

"Howdy Spinebreaker. What say you and I find ourselves a nice bloody, empty grave and beat each other senseless in it?"

Rends laughed as his packmate dashed off to find a worthy opponent. Not one to be out done in matters of drink or violence, Rends drained the flask before tucking it away to make his own challenge. When his gaze settles on the Steel Reavers making their din a smile splits his face as he recognizes one in particular.

Rends could feel the energy in the air. To be back in this place where he'd earned his name after everything that had come to pass filled him with pride. To be here among his tribe with purpose and challenges ahead gave him a sense of fulfillment and pride. Something of that must have showed in him as the sea of excited Garou parted around him and made a path to the Steel Reavers. Stepping up to them, Rends called out his challenge.

"Demon Skewer! Step up and honor me with a fight! I's twice the Garou I was when we did my Rite of War, and I intend to prove it!"

The Throat-Tearer Ahroun sniffed at the air and rounded on Kefka as he spoke. Spine Breaker was much as Kefka remembered him, a huge grey wolf with the rage of Luna dancing in his eyes like fire. He sized Kefka up, ears flat, as if trying to guess if or how the Ragabash had changed since their last meeting. Then the moment was past, and the Get of Fenris' tail curled in agreement. "Shadow Lord. I heed your challenge." Without pretense or fanfare Spine Breaker headed for the nearest grave, urging his body into Crinos, his steps occasionally uneven and strange as his completed the shift. Mocks-the-Night also reached the grave and leaped down into it. It was cramped, to say the least. Only a little more than ten feet long and about as deep, the barrow-pit was less than half that across. Spine Breaker was close enough that Kefka could feel the hot breath of his foe. The Shadow Lord noticed that whatever creative Get of Fenris had dug this hole had seen fit to fill the edges with lots of large, jagged shards of stained glass.

A low, angry growl issued out of Spine Breaker, and Kefka realized the large grey killer held a knotted noose made out of thick rope. The beast's ears twitched in anticipation.

"Rends-the-Gar. They say some Iron Rider bitch went and made you Adren. You've come a long way in a few short seasons... I'll give you that." Demon-Skewer may have laughed, but it was impossible to tell under his warhelm and the sound could easily have been lost among the clatter of the armor and the voices of wolves. "If you want to prove yourself, I'd be more than happy to provide the opportunity." As the two made their way to one of the fighting pits, Scale-Shredder, another of the Steel Reavers and one of the ones who had been playing drunk earlier in the evening, bellowed out to his fellows that Rends-the-Gar and Demon-Skewer were going to face off, and that he had a cask of good mead that said the victor would be the same as yesteryear's. One of the Bone Gnawers, Raises-All-Hell by the sound of it, took him up on that bet.

The two Garou were soon standing in another claustrophobic grave. This one had the sides and floor filled in with hard stone and layers of slate, and Rends wondered if a lesser spirit relative of Cenezoica may have played a role in its construction. With a hearty laugh, Demon-Skewer said a prayer to the spirit indwelling his armor in First Tongue, and jagged knife blades sprouted from the knuckles and gorget of his runed plating. "Show me what you are made of, whelp of Fenris!"

Vernal Equinox: The Honor Pits Empty

A familiar thrill surged through Rends the Gar as he pounded a fist into his chest, matching the beat set by the chanting and stomping above him. Rends felt the scars on his gut start to burn where Demon Skewer had done his work last year, and he smiled as he pulled the Dreamknife free of its scabbard. Even though he was spiritually exhausted, Luna gave him all the fire he needed to fight. The juggernaut opposite him took a fighting stance and the chanting reached a crescendo.

"I've got more important asses than yours to kick tonight, welp, so get...!"

He cut off as rends unleashed a roar that shook the ground, springing forward off the wall behind him into the armored Garou. Surprised, Demon Skewer stumbled back a few inches when Rends' open palm slammed into his breastplate, grabbing the lip of the armor at the neck. Faster than the eye could follow, the Dreamknife screamed down to end the duel almost before it began.

Just as quickly a gauntled hand grabbed Rends wrist and stopped it mid swing. The Reaver's other arm choked off Rends roar as it clamped around his throat. The crowd roared as the two Garou contended for a moment, matched in strength and Rage against each other. The edges of Rends' vision started to blur and he felt the pressure building inside his skull. He felt his arm being pushed back, saw the confidence in Demon Skewers' eyes, safe behind his armor. Rends knew that look. He'd worn it himself many times, safe behind Ribcage's embrace. The Reaver shook his head as he pushed Rends back, inch by inch. Leaning forwards, his words echoed inside the steel helm before slithering out just for Rends.

"Maybe after we're done here I'll go up to Nacodoches and put a real Garou in that pretty little wife you were bragging about. Between you and your father it seems there's no wolf's blood left to your line..."

Well, I wanted to play nice. Now you're jest bein' rude.

Anger flaring up inside him, Rends slammed his left forearm down into Demon Skewer's elbow, freeing his throat. Finally able to breathe again, Rends grabbed the armored visor in front of him, then, with his right arm still caught in a hold, torqued his body to slam the older Garou's armored head into the stone lined side of the grave once, twice, thrice. Dazed for only a moment, Demon Skewer swung a bladed fist into Rends' face, opening a long cut along his jaw, but Rends didn't relent. He smashed his opponent's head into the wall again, then blocked the counter attack with his offhand. Ducking low and to the left, Rends brought his dagger home on a backhanded swing into the weak armpit of the armor. Hot blood spurted out of the wound when Rends pulled the blade free, and Demon Skewer roared in outrage.

The kick caught Rends in the chest, and he felt ribs crack at the impact, but Rends had been expecting it. Rather than being sent to the other end of the tiny grave he grabbed the steel boot and pulled. Steel scraped against stone as the Juggernaut fell onto his back. Wasting no time, Rends scrambled on top of him, grabbing his good arm and twisting it back, breaking the bone after three palm strikes into the back of the elbow. Desperate, Demon Skewer wretched around and slammed his helm into Rends face. Blood filled Rends' mouth and nose, but he was beyond noticing. Roaring again, Rends tore the helm off with both hands, revealing a sweating panicked Garou. Disgusted, Rends pulled him to his feet by the breastplate, then slammed his head into Demon Skewer's nose. There was a wet crunch, and after one more headbutt, then a third for good measure Rends dropped the limp Garou. Demon Skewer's nose was completely shattered/he spat out a mouthfull of blood and teeth. The front of his armor was already soaked in blood. The crowd roared in approval as Rends offered him a claw to help him up.

"You talk too much."
