The Philodox and Ahroun set out for Crossroads, sticking to the road and moving at a more leisurely pace than they had before. They had no real time tables to work on, so they both took the time to enjoy the journey its self more than they might have otherwise. Even so, there was no friendly chatter between the two young men. Snowy Owl, tall and proud was lost in his own thoughts and contemplation as he often was when traveling. Rends-the-Gar with a sure step walked beside the Indian and kept his eyes on the forest around them, ever on the lookout under the brim of his dusty Ranger's hat. The silence between them stretched on like a bow string, taut and ready to cut.

After a long while of silence, Rends glanced at his companion, clearing his throat and breaking the silence.

"I gotta say, all things considered I'm surprised things turned out as good as they done in Crossroads. After them Heirarchy folks stormed off our first meeting when you brought up Hanging Maw I wasn't sure how they'd greet us if we met again."

Zas shakes his head stirring himself to the present, clearing his mind from the concerns of what lay ahead.

At Rends statement, he nods and says, "Things certainly have not been going in our favor as of late. It was a nice change."

A couple steps further he adds, "It was rather a bit of a surprise how the Hierarchy responded to Hanging Maw being mentioned, though after our recent conversation I suppose it made sense."

Zas then turns to look at Rends briefly as he says, "Which I suppose puts me in a unique situation with Hanging Maw himself. He has agreed to slay any ghost I create by killing the person in our realm, to prevent them from haunting me. He has thus far upheld what he claimed he would do. He was the one who told me where to begin the search for the chief's body. He has made himself useful...yet now we find that he is an outlaw of sorts and reportedly serves what sounds suspiciously like the wyrm. Interesting position to be in...especially seeing as how I'm a philodox."

Zas then looks to the ground as he continues his walk and says, "Though, I am truly sorry for making your initial efforts with the Hierarchy not go as smoothly as they otherwise could have."

Rends thinks for a moment, mulling over the Philodox's words.

"With what we know now, I think Hanging Maw may be playin' you. He promised to slay any ghost what attached its self to you, but we's heard a ghost cain't be kilt. It jest loses more of its self, which feeds this Oblivion. So what if he jest wants you to get reckless? Start killin' folk left and right so he can tear their souls to bits and feed Oblivion? You did start to get more blood thirsty recently. I ain't complainin', and I ain't met Hanging Maw but once when Chief Bowl took us to the Dark Umbra, but it sounds like he's a pretty crafty and brutal feller. Seems like the type what would withhold important information to get what he wants."

Rends fidgets briefly, adjusting his weapons on his belt.

"I ain't one to beat a dead horse. I made myself clear after it happened and didn't none of us know what coulda happened. No real harm done, I guess. Jest, next time, leave the negotiations up to me."

They go for a few more steps in silence.

"That said, I'm having a hard time thinking of yer punishment."

He looks at Zas with a dead serious face, but there is a glint hiding behind his shaded eyes.

"I reckon I may make you ride a horse the whole way when we set out on our next mission. That should beat some sense into you."

Zas considers the potential for Hanging Maw to be using him and says, "It would certainly be crafty. But, he showed me the scalp he took off the woman. The hierarchy told us there wasn't a way for us to truly kill a ghost, but that doesn't mean ghosts couldn't kill each other. Yet he did fail to mention his involvement with the Hierarchy....I just don't know. Certainly something to be wary of-thus I'm hoping this excursion proves helpful."

At Rends insistence to leave negotiations to him, Zas nods firmly as he says, "I didn't like the negotiations we had to do with the Comanche, and I certainly wasn't a fan of them here..."

At Rends suggested form of punishment Zas purses his lips together before saying, "I'd be terrified to have you be a philodox. You truly know how to break a man."

"I ain't got the patience to be a judge. I think I'll stick to fightin and pplamin. What do you hope to get from this? What do you think the hierarchy can teach you? a new way of fightin ghosts?"

The Silent strider smiles and says, "We must all do as Gaia has called us to maximize our strengths and patience does not come easy...though she did seem to die easy enough."

Zas rubs his chin as he says, "As far as what I hope to get is concerned, I hope it will be something to that effect. At the very least, being able to shrug off some of the effects spectres' wield would be nice."

Zas draws a breath as he says, "I don't know all the details, but what I do know is that there is some form of gift known by my tribe that can only be learned from the spirits of the dead that is supposed to help deal with ghosts. Given that both the pack and myself seem to keep finding ourselves dealing with them and we've learned recently that they can't be killed by our claws-I'm looking for options."

The philodox then turns to keep walking as he says, "We should talk like this more often. It's nice being able to find common ground between us."

Rends is silent again for a long moment, thinking.

"Even before I knew I was a Garou, and before what happened to my family, I never thought I'd be working with an Injun."

He shakes his head ruefully, the beginnings of a smile playing on his face.

"Three years ago my biggest worry was Travis rattin' on me fer ditchin' my chores to go fishin'. Pa'd beat me if he found out, but that weren't nothin'. 'Course I didn't know he was Garou. Even so, as I grew up he told me and my brothers stories about how he'd taken the land fer our little town from a bunch o' worthless Injuns. He bragged about it every time he got drunk. He weren't able to wipe all of 'em out, and he always said how he wanted to finish them off. They made a few raids over the years, but nothin' really bad. Far as I can figure, even though Pa and Mr. Henderson was the only Garou we had, they managed to take and keep that little spit of a Caern fer some fifteen years from at least two packs of Uktena."

He shakes his head, spitting at the memories.

"All that to say, I think Pa wanted to use me to finally wipe them out once I'd had my first change. 'Course he ended up doin' somethin' else instead..."

His face grows dark, his fists clenching. Then he shakes his head, clearing it.

"Anyhow, never saw myself joining up with an Injun. 'Specially not joining a pack with one. But I guess we cain't always see what our path is. It's only on us to fight our way through the roughage."

He turns to Zas, looking him in the eye.

"All things considred, I'm glad of where I am now. I'm proud of the man I am, and I know that part of that man came from my past. And part of it is bein' shaped by you, and Mocks, and Zoe, and Eaton. We don't always get along, but I guess we could do worse fer a Philodox is what I'm sayin'."

Zas comes to an immediate halt. He was completely unprepared for the words the Get of Fenris had just spoken. To hear the Fenrir-the one in his own pack to have given him the most resistance to peaceful cooperation, give him a compliment of any sort was the first step forward he felt had been made towards his goal of uniting the tribes in quite some time...and to say the words fell upon grateful ears like rain upon the parched desert plains would have been a gross understatement given Chief Bowles passing.

He turns to face Rends without saying a word as a large smile forms on his face. The philodox blinks once before holding out his hand for a shake.

Rends takes a few steps before he realizes Zas is no longer walking. He turns back and regards the proffered hand with an amused expression.

"You ain't gonna start cryin' are ya?"

He chuckles and gives a firm handshake.

"Don't know why I'm feelin' so sentimental today. Guess I'm jest relieved our first mission with me as Alpha went so smooth. I cain't afford to have us split if that's to keep up though. I reckon we need to all be together, and that needs to start with us since we get along the least of all of us. Hell, if I wasn't Alpha I probably wouldn't have come with you at all today. But I need to show leadership and watch out fer the least of us before I tend to myself. And I gotta admit, maybe you was right about Chief Bowl. In the end he died a hero, he died a Garou's death. I'm shamed to admit it, but I'd been thinking him a washed up coward until Crossroads. But he was jest choosin' his battles best he could. Hard to fight when the world's stacked up against you and he fell spittin' in his enemy's eye. You cain't ask fer a better end."

He fidgets, rubbing the back of his neck as he starts down the road again.

"Of course, if you start cryin' I'll have to beat you."

Zas follows along beside the Ahroun as he says, "An Apache brave never cries-the desert sand does occasionally blow into our eyes however and they water."

Zas then with a sigh of contentment says, "The decision to make you alpha was not something as simple as a mere vote of your packmates-Gaia played a role in it as well. Direct any to me who would speak to the contrary."

Zas then stares back to the road before them as he says, "Chief Bowles never forgot his purpose. Though we did not know him long-I feel that we knew him well. He was a good chief. I am glad you were able to see that-through his sacrifice-you can serve as witness to your own tribe that there are at least some among the pure who serve Gaia faithfully with all they have; til the bitter end."

Zas then with a slight grin readies to break into a run as he looks at the Ahroun and says, "You hit kinda like a girl so I reckon I can take it."

Rends regards his usually stoic companion for a moment, trying to decide how to react.

He decides on a chuckle as he cracks his knuckles.

"Keep smilin'. I'll pay you back in full next time we spar. I'll show you exactly how hard I can hit..."

He pops his neck next, still meandering down the road.

The two Garou were still a good several miles from the sleepy town of Crossroads, but they were making good time. Zas was as swift-footed as ever, and the late winter crescent moon hung benevolently in the sky.

A lone figure crouched by the side of the road before them. The Garou's vigorous pace allowed them to over take the man, and as they drew near they saw that he was a dark-skinned and clad in deer hide. The smell of the Indian was like grave dirt, and as they slowed and closed the last few paces it was clear that dark lines of warpaint were smeared over hollow cheeks. A wheezing laugh sagged out of the man's chest, his eyes fixed vindictively on Zas B'ul, ignoring, at least for now, Rends-the-Gar's presence.

"The dog returns to his vomit, Ha! Haheheh. Hail, friend of the Tsalagi."

Zas makes no move to alter his course but does come to a halt as he stares at Hanging Maw crouching beside the road.

Zas looks at the figure and says, "I have returned, yes, but I am no dog. You seem less pleased of my coming than when we last met-First Beloved of the Cherokee...offering insult rather than kind words. Tell me, why do you come to this place in such a way?"

As Zas says this he glances to Rends cautiously but says nothing.

The dead man's jaw made a wet popping noise as his eyes blazed with scarce-contained fury. "Less pleased, yes, yes! I begged you to aid my Cherokee, to rescue their mortal husks from defilement. You instead sing them to sleep, only to be harvested by the Pale-skin dead! I am not 'less pleased,' hahahaheh..."  Bitter, cruel laughter slipped through cracked lips.

"No, I am ENRAGED." The man was no longer a man, but a towering wolf-thing bathed in guttering corpse light. Scalps were woven into his hide, half-covering ghastly mortal wounds that never healed. His tongue writhed as he snarled and gurgled his words, exposed to the chill night air by dint of a horribly mangled jaw that hung loose and limp. Congealed blood and saliva clung to sharp yellow fangs that had tasted throats in both life and death. "The sorcerers were slain, yes, good, but in ignorance you spurned all we had striven for! You and your beloved Pale-skins blindly joined with my enemies. The Hierarchy- they are just as they were in life- haheheh! Ha! Not an honorable warrior among them. They are an empire of slavers, bloody-handed invaders who slay and damn with twisted words and broken treaties. You would not permit the Wyrmcomers these things in life, I think, but you welcome them in death as comrades?" The apparition receded with a shudder, shrinking back into the form of a lonely warchief.

"The last of the Cherokee in these lands stands before me, one who acted with honor in times past. Where is that honor now?"

Zas turns to Rends at this point and says to Hanging Maw, "We have not joined with them friend. Mistaken as we may have been to leave the remains of the Warriors in their clutches, we are not their allies. Even now we travel to meet with them to learn of their secrets and to assess their strength."

Zas then turns to face Hanging Maw again, "I cannot however be trusted to make the just choice when you withhold your plans from me. You advised me to tear down the dam but did not say it would be used to protect the fallen Braves. When you walked among the quick as a chief-surely you did not send your Braves to battle without all the story. I know not of the lands of the dead."

Zas grows mildly frustrated as he says, "You claim they have broken treaties and speak with twisted words. This is not good. They claim however that you serve a master by the name of Oblivion. Is this true?"

Zas then with a piercing stare says with a growl, "I still carry honor. I however cannot make honorable decisions when I deal only in half truths. Speak plainly to me. Are they correct in whom you serve-this oblivion reeks of the wyrm. Has one who once served Gaia fallen? If this is merely more deception on their part so be it, but if not tell me now."

Rends watched the exchange silently, hands to his weapons and ready to draw at any sign of aggression from the ghost. He nods along with Zas, then pipes up.

"I was the one made the call to not flood the field."

He fixes his own glare on the decrepit war chief.

"I don't trust you. Never have. I chose to deal with the Heirarchy because they were more open and up front with us. Dealing with you is like trying to leash a mad dog and I won't put my pack in that kind of danger without damn good reason."

He spits to the side, still holding the dead man's gaze.

"You think we were wrong to partner with them? Fine. I can admit when I'm wrong. Prove it. Show us they's the bad guys and you ain't servin' some dark... somethin' and we'll consider it. Show us they're our enemies and not jest yours. Until you do all yer words mean nothing."

The dead Garou bared his teeth as if in pain as he listened to Zas' words. When Rends-the-Gar spoke, Hanging Maw snarled, his jaw distending and almost snake-like: "So it was you who turns the last few Cherokee against each other. You speak to me of lacking trust, Pale-skin? You speak of enemies who are not your own? You are right. Torturers and slavers without honor would be your natural allies, I think. Go to them and hear the whimpers issuing from their new arms. I promise if you listen hard enough, a few of those moaned words will be in the tongue of the Tsalagi."

The ghost turned back toward Zas, attempting to contain his frustration. "One who knows nothing of what lurks beyond the Shroud? Hahehheh, come now, you have been there, strode the darkest of paths before your time. Some things you know, or at least... suspect. Oblivion reeks of the Wyrm? HahehehaHA! All the deadlands stink of dissolution! You know this. Oblivion is the second death, one that comes in its own time. All Wraiths must face it, as all mortals must die."

"I will share what I know, and I will not hide what I am. I am not fallen, I AM DEAD." The spectre crowed, his words an uneven howl of pained exultation. "The spirits are so so silent. Gaia does not hear me beyond the veil of death; yet still I fight for the Cherokee people and resist the Wyrmcomers as best I can." Hanging Maw's expression changed from a look of anger to one of weary contrition. "The question is, will you help me?"

"The simpering Pale-skins resist the tide of Oblivion, and to do it they must torment both the living and the dead, feeding off pain and misery in desperation. Your forays into my world have been brief, so you have not seen what little remains of the happy hunting grounds. Heh, hah, then perhaps the judge would stay his hasty judgement. You have not seen the hordes of tormented dead Pure, butchered by bullets and plague and starvation, only to be broken or warped by the encroaching Legions and their implacable invasion. Forges taller than hills, burning and running with the drippings of souls... Oblivion is sweet when compared to the slaver's art."

"And that is where those 'quiet souls' of the Cherokee are now bound- to be fed into the flames, their pain constant, eternal. That is not dissolution or peace."

Zas looks to Rends before he says with firm resolve, "I deal in truths and facts. My alpha is not like other Wyrmbringers. Saying he acts without honor is falsehood. You risk rending all ties with me by continuing in such lies. If you wish for our or my help, heaped insults do not bode well."

Zas looks intensely at the spectre as he says, "I honor my word. I have promised to defend the Cherokee in death and so I shall. If what you say is true about this Hierarchy having deceived our kind and bringing harm to those I swore to defend then they risk war."

Zas then looks to Rends the Gar with a knowing glance as he says, "However, if war is to come-we must know both our opponents and ourselves."

Zas looks then back to Hanging Maw, "You are proof that our teeth and claws do not destroy wraiths fully. If we were to join in as one war party what good would our kind serve? How do we kill what is as you say dead already?"

Zas then adds almost as an after thought, "What other allies would you bring to this fight? You claim you wage your war against the Wyrmbringers...is this done alone or do you have forces under you similar to when we last fought? You say the Wyrmbringers have legions---? They seemed intimidated by you-the mere mention of your name caused them to depart. It would seem you are stronger than you would suggest."

Zas then leans in close and utters in a calm but ice cold tone, "I have extended my hand in a truce to you once before. If what you say of this Hierarchy is true you will have gained my trust. I do not suffer deceit however, Mislead me or those I hold close and I will personally see to it that your final death as you put it, is worse than your first by sevenfold."

Rends the Gar raised up a hand, forestalling further comments.

"Holt on jest a minute. Our fight is against the Wyrm, and it's on this side of Death. Far as I see it, we ain't got no business gettin' messed up in ghotsly business 'scept where it intersects with our own. We're going to Crossroads to learn more. That's all."

He fixes a glare on the ghastly spectre.

"Our concern is fer the livin'. We only deal in the production end of death. Not the final product. I still ain't heard any reason fer that to change. If death is miserable, maybe it ain't so different from life after all. But you yourself said Gaia don't hear the cryin' of yer people. Well that's a shame, but we's Gaia's claws. We go where she sends us, and we kill where we need to. If She has no presence there, it ain't a place we need to spend much time in."

Zas then turns to look at Rends without giving Hanging Maw a chance to speak as he says, "Do you recall the Forked Paths Caern where we met Malchizadek? There were many Garou who fell in battle with a ghost of some form who had grown too powerful. If what he says is true, our actions in laying the Cherokee Braves to rest only further armed the forces of the Hierarchy. If their forces are as great as they claim, we just made them that much stronger and like it or not we are involved in ghostly business now.

This place is not far from Red Oath's caern and the Hierarchy themselves told us they were spreading westward... as their influence spreads more caerns may be threatened. The fight with the Forked Paths Caern's enemy happened close to that place."

Zas then takes a breath, "I'm not saying you are wrong to continue our plans to meet with the Hierarchy and to learn as much as we can; I agree we should. But, to say we only fight the wyrm in this realm allows the wyrm to grow in others and the litany calls us to fight the wyrm wherever it dwells. Obviously, the Weeping Moon wyrm cult are capable of using the dead at their command. We killed only the ones we knew about. Whose to say we killed them all? If we just provided the cult with stronger servants who we can't permanently end we just hurt ourselves later down the road. You may not care for the cries of the Cherokee dead but I know you abide by the litany and you care for the caern and those in Nacogdoches."

In response to Zas B'ul asking about the strength of the enemies of Hierarchy, Hanging Maw's jaws champed, a few flecks of spectral drool spraying from his teeth. "I have no reason to lie. I have slain the slaves of the Hierarchy for nearly a hundred years, and I will continue to do so with you or without." "Many are the dead who resist, but rarely are they able to claw their way back to the lands of the quick... but this, this is good for your kind, for they cannot slake their appetites on the living. In the deepest parts of the happy hunting grounds, a relentless battle rages, but the slow march west continues. What you see here is but a few ragtag scouts, the forward outpost of an invading army of dead."

"And you... you have strengthened them, at least for a time." Hollow eyes blazed with feverish corpse-light.

When Rends spoke of role of the Garou serving Gaia, the spectre shook his head, laughing sardonically. "Hahahahe, do not be so short sighted. Death comes for all. You may find yourself crossing the Shroud one day, Pale-skin, and Gaia's love offers no protection from the confines of the grave."

Hanging Maw's eyes flit from one Garou to the other as they discuss the potential dangers posed by the restless dead, but his face remained impassive. When Zas mentioned providing more pawns for the Weeping Moon, the dead man spoke again, his chosen words slow and careful: "This is truth. When the one called Bill Thatcher died, he became quite dangerous, an unliving weapon in the hands of the unrighteous quick. Ha! Heheh, I could see the tangled thorns of Oblivion pulling at him even from afar."

He turned toward Rends-the-Gar, muttering though a slackening jaw. "You yourself did some of that, Invader- the dead have no bodies, just souls given form. Tear at that, you harm their very essence. Do enough... harm, hehahaha, and the dead are unable to resist the pull of dissolution, to be sent screaming into the arms of Oblivion."

"You say I serve the Wyrm, but I cannot see how this is so. I do in death what I did in life- I bring ruin to the Wyrmcomers. If this results in their souls feeding Oblivion... hehah... so be it."

Zas then turns his gaze back to the spectre as he says, "I have not deemed you of the wyrm-yet...my judgement upon you is not made in haste. I asked you to proclaim your allegiance -to defend your self and your honor-as the tainted words of the hierarchy were all the accusation brought before me. I have rendered unto you no judgements this day. I have told you of my intentions to see what truth rests in your words by meeting with the Hierarchy."

Zas then relaxes slightly as he says, "You claim these are mere scouts before an army that draws near our sacred places. You claim the wyrmbringers have misled us and grow in strength by arming themselves. If this is true, such actions are the steps taken before a war-deception, sending of scouts, fashioning weapons in great number. Your judgement rests now on your own words. If your words prove true I will not see you as a servant of the wyrm for what boon would a servant of the wyrm gain by alerting Gaia's Warriors of such an attack. If your words prove to be lies then I shall call you out as the slave of grandfather serpent who seeks to cause dissension."

Zas then draws a breath, as he looks to Rends, but says to Hanging Maw, "As to your question of help...if what you say is truth-you will have earned my help. However, I shall not speak for the rest of my kind. That choice will be left to them, but I will speak to your favor in attempts to sway them....if and only if your words are true. That is my word."

Rends fixed a steady glare on the spectre, unblinking.

"We fight in the land of the livin. I will fight in the lands of the dead when I am counted among them. The only way I plan on helping until then is by keeping the dead on yer side of the shroud and letting yer end sort it's self out."

He looks sidelong to zas.

"We know nothing bout yer politics and we ain't about to get ourselves in the middle of yer war. We are going to crossroads to learn how to fight the dead so we can defend ourselves in the future from the weeping moon."

He looks back to hanging maw.

"If you want us ta keep away from them, give us what we want and save us the trip. Ain't it tradition to court potential allies with gifts and not veiled threats?"

Hanging Maw listened to what both Garou had to say, and as Rends-the-Gar finished he threw back his head in a rattling laugh. "Hahehehhehe! Yes, the Pale-skin knows that perhaps it is better to be cunning then honorable." Old tan skin peeled back to expose the tattered hide and mangled visage of a dead Crinos wreathed in corpse-light. "Yes. If you continue down the path of the death-maker, as all Garou must, then you should be safe from the grasp of those oh-so-righteously slain. Yes."

"But what do I gain in return for bestowing such favors? Hehah... I am not averse to offering such boons, I just take pains not to empower my enemies..." The drooling dead werewolf gazed at Zas, the accusatory intent behind the words clearly evident.

Zas looks to Rends first with a sigh as if he had expected his response then as he continues Zas says, "We can not leave this investigation undone for the safety of the caern at the very least. If he wishes to offer gifts in hopes of peace so be it, but by accepting them we enter into an agreement with him and thereby make ourselves enemies of the Hierarchy. Should they discover such involvement while we are in their domain...we would likely not fare well."

Zas then says, "He did tell us that causing enough harm to wraiths would send them to oblivion. Perhaps this is not the type of combat expertise you seek, but it has been offered so far."

Zas then says to Hanging Maw with piqued curiosity, "You know of a gift that would aid in dealing with the Hierarchy?"

At the veiled accusation, Zas grimaces as he says, "Your anger at my actions can only be thrown back upon yourself. I upheld my word of restoring Chief Bowles to Gaia. I laid the Braves to rest under the same intent of aiding them for their bodies could not be used by the wyrm cult as they were. If you had wished otherwise for them the failure in their rescue lies in your own poor leadership. I have upheld my word and will continue to do so to the letter-let no man, spirit, or wraith say otherwise."

Zas then regains control of his fury as he says, "You know what I offer in exchange for your truth. That offer remains. Your judgement and my potential aid rests on your honesty. If you wish to provide some other means of your innocence that does not require us to continue to meet with the Hierarchy for validation, then do so and I shall hear it...."

An idea comes to the Silent Strider and he says with measured words, "Perhaps by providing us with the information and gifts we seek, I could know of your innocence sooner and thereby be able to accept your words as truth thereby enabling us with the potential to gain aid for greater numbers of Garou to aggressively defend the caern by eliminating or chasing away the Hierarchy here-for what servant of the wyrm would allow themselves to be left willingly vulnerable?"
