PostSubject: Not you, too!   Sun 02 Nov 2014, 07:15

After the Prodigals' triumphant return to Nacogdoches and meeting with Red Oath, the pack had all gone their separate ways for a while to catch up with loved ones and find some food and rest. On the way back to the caern for the moot, Zoe caught up to Mocks a mile or so from their destination.

"Hey there, brother. I was wondering if I could ask you about your feelings concerning Morse's machine. Zas and I had a similar conversation in which he deemed the machine of the Wyrm and worthy of destruction. I, on the other hand, argued that the machine itself had no ill intent in its creation, though Huling managed to use it for evil. What makes you so opposed to us hooking up this machine and further investigating how it works?"

Kefka cocks his head sideways as be listens to his Sister speak.

"I'm goin' to assume that talk didn't go to well with Zas"
he chuckles before continuing.
"Now I don't think we ought to destroy. It obviously will be off great use... After Zavala I am just very wary of the machine. Not this to type of machine in general mind you, jes the one we brought back from Zavala and delivered to Red Oath. That machine weren't connected by wires when MetalNoise sent that message for me, to that no named spirit. Maybe the wires were still connected in the Umbra though. Idk. What I don't want is to use it and that no named Spirit knowing what we are some since he is on league with the girls. I think it is safer to build two of our own. However there ain't no real way to test that."

He pauses and closes his eyes to think as a grin appears.

"Now I still don't think we should destroy the one we retrieved. We can use it to try and send decoy messages. If that Spirit is wanting to spy on us... We should let it. Fill its ear with wrong information. Try and stay a step ahead. "

He looks at Zoe and smiles

"It's dangerous. Ain't no doubt about that. But I prefer to fight fire with fire. If the enemy uses it...we need all the info we can get about it and use it against them. Ya
know?"

Zoe's relief was immediate and apparent. "Thank Gaia, you're not as far gone as Zas is. He thinks the machine is of the Wyrm, not just tainted by it, and is therefore worthy of nothing but destruction, where I believe the machine is neither good nor evil and its use is purely dependent upon its operator. I can understand your concern though. A door is also amoral, but it can be opened to allow terrible things to pass through."

Zoe's eyes narrowed quizzically. "What makes you think the nameless spirit has any interest in spying on us? It's probably just as glad to be rid of us as we were to be rid of Zavala and the girls. You think it's pissed that we took out a couple of the sisters? I agree we don't need to draw anything like that to the caern, but if we can draw it into a trap elsewhere and dispose of it, the world will be all the better, don't you think?"

The Theurge's head bobbed excitedly at the mention of replicating the machine. "I would be thrilled and honored to be involved in such a process, but my skills in such a task don't even come close to O'Toole's! He would be the best person for the job. Sure, Cold Stare is all spirit savvy and whatnot, but I've never met a greater inventor than Ryan O'Toole."

Wistful tears crept into her eyes at the thought of her adopted father, who saw fit to take a broken girl under his wing all those years ago and mold her into who she was today, even if she were a bit too Weaver-enamored than Zas Bu'l might like.

Kefka nods in agreement as Zoe reminisces about O'Toole.

"O'Toole...I liked that feller even if he ain't a Garou. You should talk to Red and see if he can come visit and take a look. I know that you have mentioned him visiting before."

His smile begins to fade as he runs a hand through his hair. Pulling out clumps. He sighs as he throws his hair on the ground and stomps it into the dirt.

"The thing is Zoe...How can we trap it and dispose of it? We know nothin' bout it. It knows everything about us, due to them brats. We can't go messin' around without knowing what we are dealing with. We went blind into Zavala and got played like fools. I don't plan on lettin' that happen again."

He pauses and spits on the ground. Taking a swig from his newly filled flask. Taking time to enjoy the liquor that was missing on his tongue in Zavala.

"It ain't rid of us Zoe... We's Garou. They's Wyrm. We have to clean our mess up and track them down. It knows what we are. It's clever. It's going to be prepared... I expect to see more silver. Slickblood is working on tracking them down for us. We may be through with Zavala...but we ain't finished with those girls, and thusly whatever the hell that unnamed creature is."

The sound of Slick Blood's laughter carried through the cold night air as the two neared the caern. "I will talk to Red about having O'Toole visit and assist us with the machine. She wished to consult with him in the past, but he has yet to actually make it here."

She sighed audibly and shook her head.
"Unless we can find something in a book somewhere or from someone who's dealt with this spirit before, we may simply have to engage him on our terms and hope for the best. We have yet to encounter a spirit that did not eventually fall to our teeth and claws. I doubt this one is an exception."

A look of frustration covered Zoe's face. "We should have been able to dispose of the girls while we were still in Zavala. It angers me that most of them were able to slip away undetected while we went bobbing for fetishes in the river. How could we be so foolish not to keep watch while in the house of a potential foe?"

Mocks put his hand on Zoe's shoulder.

"They got in our heads Zoe. Could be we didn't think to keep watch and we trusted them...because they told us to trust them."

He pulls her close.

"We'll get them. We'll be ready. If not we'll be dead."

He lets her go and shrugs his shoulders.

"We shouldn't go after this Spirit set to destroy it...Look what happened in Perdido. We used teeth and claw on Akna and got cursed. We should talk to other spirits. See what they know, see if they can help. Try and show them we aren't what they think we are."

An exasperated sigh escaped Zoe's lips before she could restrain it. "Yet another decision we're now having to face the consequences of - killing Akna in such a way that we are cursed and feared by most spirits. I have been afraid to summon any spirits for fear that they might not answer or just refuse to lend us aid. I don't know what spirits would be willing to help us other than the ones we already know."

Mocks stops in his tracks and gives Zoe a hard stare.

"What good to a pack is a Theurge who won't summon spirits?"

He spits on the ground and takes another swig from his flask.

Zoe rolled her eyes and scoffed. "For the record, a Theurge is more than just a spirit-summoner. She is called to be wise and to lead her back safely into, out of, and through the Umbral realms, as I did quite efficiently in Zavala, thus saving your skin, but we won't dwell on that topic again. Also, to clarify, I summoned both Zas's river turtle friend and Metal Noise while in Zavala, so I am summoning spirits, I just don't look forward to it as much as I used to because the spirits are likely to be more difficult than before, and unlike the girls, I do not feel right forcing spirits to do what I want them to do."

Her face grew annoyed as she glared up at the crescent moon. "I always prided myself on being a friend to spirits and having a positive encounter with every spirit I summon. Now, thanks to something I didn't even take part in, the spirits are more likely to give me a wide berth to avoid dealing with us at all."

She held up a hand in defense before the Ragabash had a chance to mock her further. "I know, life isn't easy and hard times make us stronger, but I'm just explaining that I will summon spirits whenever asked to do so or whenever it is necessary, but I simply do not find the same pleasure in it as I once did."

Mocks smiles.

"You are our spiritual gateway Zoe. If anyone is going to be able to fix this...it's you. We can't just keep summoning spirits when we need something, that won't make the spirits like us anymore. What if we summoned spirits to help them? Ask for nothing in return except that they hear our side of the story. Instead of having our spirits be our tools, let's be theirs."

He smiles at Zoe.

"Your name is Hears The Song, Gaia has called you to be a Theurge. You need your passion Zoe. Without passion, without heart... spirits won't hear your call. You need your passion again. You seemed to find a little back there talking about the machine and Metal Noise. Why not start with other friends of Cockroach, more Weaver spirits?"

Zoe's eyes lit up at his suggestion. "I don't care what the others say, Mocks the Night, you are brilliant! We can offer our services to spirits from time to time for the sake of simply gaining a boost to our reputation. Metal Noise is certainly an interesting ally, but you always have to be careful offering help to Weaver spirits. They are hell-bent on order and after you've helped them out, they may very well decide that you are now the most disorderly thing around and will take strides to calcify you. That's what happened during my rite of passage. I helped a pattern spider out by awakening the Architect, but then the spiders turned on me and just kept screeching 'Calcify! Calcify!' If it hadn't been for Papa Stagecoach and the Stranger, well, suffice it to say we wouldn't be having this conversation today."

She smiled at her brother's moonlit visage. "But I still like the idea of helping spirits out not expecting anything in return but for them to tell others of our deeds. Certainly we can find some spirits around here somewhere that need some assistance."

Zoe turned her face to the sky and laughed loudly. "And here I thought it was your charming personality and good looks! Looks like Harriet lucked out with you, Shadow Lord."

Peering into the clearing the two noticed that their remaining pack members had not yet arrived. She turned back to Zas, face contorted in thought.

"Mocks, Zas believes that me and my tribe are dangerously enamored with the Weaver to the extent that it may jeopadize our devotion to Gaia. The Get 'affectionately' refer to us as urrah. What do the Shadow Lords think of the way Iron Riders choose to embrace technology and live so comfortably among humans?"

Mocks lights up as Zoe mentions Harriet. After Zoe asks her question he cocks his head to the side as he ponders.

"Well Zoe... I can't speak for all Shadow Lords, I can however speak for myself. I have no qualms with it. If you recall we Shadow Lords aren't always welcomed for our methods. That doesn't mean our methods aren't effective. Same could be said for the method of your iron riders. The Wyrm is ever going to use and corrupt humans. If we don't understand what they will be using against us, what all they have access too...we will have lost. Tooth and claw can only get you so far. You need cunning, creativity, knowledge. Those are the factors that will win the long game."

Zoe's head nodded in understanding though her face still held a questioning gaze.

"To be honest, brother, I know next to nothing about your tribe."

She laughed. "Then again perhaps that is one of the defining features of a tribe that considers itself a master of darkness. What ways of yours do others not approve of? How are you different from the others?"

Kefka chuckles darkly, and shakes his head.

"You asked for this...remember that."

He slows the pace of his walk to match his slowed hushed tone.

"Besides my ancestors, and the few at the Forked Path caern I have only known 2 other Shadow Lords. One was named Drowns His Foes, the other...I forget. Just another face. Drowns His Foes saw to my Rite of Passage. My father cursed me for being Garou and ran me out. I was to take retribution on him. Deliver justice. I convinced my brothers to leave his side. I confronted my father. I beat him, I tied him to a tree. I set fire to his bar which set the whole town ablaze. Grandfather Thunder hurled lightning through my father's chest. I came across a hapless Garou...wounded. she had been fighting Drowns His Foes. She didn't agree with his methods. Tried to turn me against him. He showed up. Both their faces were unreadable. Both blamed the other for my Mother's death. Drowns His Foes told me to finish her off... I crushed her under my heel!"

Kefka has stopped walking by this point and is stifling laughter.

"My rite of passage was a success. I was told "good job."

Kefka stops laughing and looks at Zoe.

"Do you understand?"

Zoe's surprise was evidenced by her agape mouth, deep breathing, and wide eyes.

"You...wow...that's...yeah..."

She closed her mouth until she could form a complete sentence.

"I could never do that to either of my fathers. And then to that woman against whom you had no proof? To just kill her without question?"

A moment of silence as Zoe examined the Shadow Lord's face in a new light. Her next words came softly and hesitantly.

"Was it...easy...for you to do that?"

Mocks stares at Zoe, his teeth clenched behind closed lips. He closes his eyes and takes a few deep breaths. He opens his eyes and gives his Sister a sorrowful smile.

"Put yourself in my shoes. I was cast out by my family. Drowns His Foes found me. Do you bite the only hand helping you, or do you listen."

He pauses and begins to walk forward again.

"It was easier than you can imagine."

Zoe's eyes dropped to the ground and she stood in silence for a long moment.

"As far as I know, I was cast out by my family. Before O'Toole took me in, I lived on the streets with three older boys, who were by no means gentle caretakers, but they taught me enough to survive as long as I did my part to get them what they wanted."

A shudder involuntarily rocked her body as she recalled the night of her first change. "The oldest of the boys, Rosco, found me after I had been living with O'Toole for about eight years. He thought I was the reason he and the twins had been caught by the Law after I left the streets. He and a couple of men I had never seen came to rough me up, but then..."

Zoe's eyes met Mocks' with a sad intensity. "I changed. The first blood I spilt was that of the hand who had helped me when no one else would. And then the only father I'd ever known sent me away...but I would never harm Papa O'Toole, not even if Gaia herself told me to do so."

"O'Toole may be as a father to you, but he is not kinfolk. He does not carry Garou blood in him. By casting me out my Father had turned his back on myself, The Shadow Lords, Mother Gaia herself. He needed to be punished. As a kinfolk his duty is to serve. This is what was explained to me by Drowns His Foes."

He scoffs.

"Quite different from your tribe, yes?"

He pauses and turns around to face Zoe.

"I think it is honorable you won't harm O'Toole Zoe...but be careful. The day might come where we war with the mages...It would be best to have a contingency plan."

Zoe's still registered her pensive contemplation. "What of my mother? She was kinfolk, yet somehow she allowed me to become separated from her and as far as I can tell she has not sought me out. I haven't exactly been hiding. Is she deserving of the same fate as your father?"

Zoe chewed on her lower lip as she considered the Ragabash's words on the mages. "I doubt my father would ever join ranks with other mages against Garou, especially not knowing that I am one of them. And even if it did come to warring between the two groups..."

Her thoughts trailed off as she considered coming face to face with him in battle or worse having one of her pack mates go toe to toe with him. How would she choose a side? Could she stop them before one of them lost a life? Would it be impossible to spare him from other Garou outside her pack who were nearby?

The Shadow Lord cleared his throat and brought her back from her rampant thoughts.

"Let's just hope it never comes to that."

Kefka nods.

"I hope it doesn't come to that either, I just want to be prepared. I don't want you blindsided. With any luck if it starts to head that direction we can send warning to O'Toole to go into hiding, and perhaps vacation with him. We are Coyote, no matter what we do we can't please people so why try?" He laughs and gives Zoe a wink.

He then coughs and regains his serious composure.

"Your mother may have already met that fate..."

He then stops to contemplate.

"Although we don't know why you are on your own. Perhaps it is for your own good, perhaps had you stayed you would have been erased along with your father. My father deserved his fate because he cast me out of malice, and fear. No other reason. He made a choice. Until we know why your mother made that choice we cannot justly decide her fate."

He smiles at her.

"Besides you are a better person than I am Zoe Kostas. After I was cast out I wanted my father punished. I was glad to see Grandfather Thunder strike him down. You hold no such hate in your heart."

The scent of burning wood drifted through the cool night air as a small bonfire was started in the caern in preparation for the moot.

"I would love for you all to have mine and O'Toole's back in that situation, but I would understand if you chose not to."

A concerned look crossed the face of the young Theurge before she gave a consenting nod.

"You're right. She may very well have passed away already. I do hope she still lives though if for the sake of nothing more than learning more about my father and my past. I have to believe there is a good, honorable reason that I am separated from her and that those girls were just full of lies when they said my widowed parent hated me."

She scoffed softly and smiled.
"I don't know if I am better than you, just different."

Zoe's eyes pitied her brother as he spoke his final words.

"Do you still hold that hatred for him even now that he is gone?"

"The fact he is dead does not change who he was. When someone you love dies, you still love them. Hatred works the same."
