PostSubject: History in the Making   History in the Making EmptyMon 27 Oct 2014, 21:48

Zas approached the Prodigals Galliard after the pack had almost finished collecting all of their fetishes from the river. The Bone Gnawer was attempting to repair the strange saw tool he tended to carry with him, but was having little success. The Silent Strider gazed out at the relatively slow moving stream, his eyes full of concern but his face showing nothing but weariness as he says almost more to himself than Eaton in a flat tone of voice, "It is both good and bad that we have been so fortunate in recovering these."

He then turns and looks straight at Eaton as he says with a strained voice, his own broken Bow tightly gripped in his hands, "Tell me, do you know of any stories about Gaian gifts such as fetishes or talens that have been lost due to careless Garou--or do we the Prodigals get to proclaim that tale first?

I ask because I wish to learn from any old tales that you know of that are similar to what has happened here."

An Audible "dammit" came from Eaton as a spring shot from his grasp and bounced along the ground. Half-growling half-sighing he looked at Zas, "Thankfully, this ain't the first time this happened."

He paused, reconsidering his words, "Okay, I wouldn't say its a good thing. Any Fetish lost is terrible. The Wyrm might claim those from the Garou he kills in battle. Usin' the fetish inappropriately so the spirit abandons the fetish or is corrupted has happened before. And then there are the knuckleheaded pups who are disarmed by their enemies while they take a nap!"

Though clearly fuming, he calms slightly as his adds, "Though I know somethin' about each one of 'em cases. Which one would make ya feel better?"

Zas looked back to the river and considered the options as they had been presented. He then looked back to the town of Zavala and says, "I don't know that either story will make me feel better, but I think the second one sounds more appropriate given the current situation. I certainly feel like a pup again..."

He turns back to Eaton, "The story of the pups. What happened?"

Finally locating the missing spring Eaton hide the fractured contraption in his robes, "Alrighty, then. Heard this way back at Rat's Nest. And to think I laughed at it at the time."

"There were a group of young Garou, not a pack, and each of 'em cliaths. Some say there were all Metis, growin' up in the same caren but that ain't fair and that's just to discredit 'em. Others say they came from all tribes, all together 'cause of a Grand Moot. Now matter who they were, what bound these Garou together was that each one had just inherited their own fetish:"

He formed a fist and slammed it into his open palm,
"One was a klaive that refused to break in the fiercest battle."
He gestrued around his neck and then held up a finger,
"Another was a necklace that could change the appearance of it's bearer but not change the actual shape."

The Bone Gnawer held his open hands apart as if he was cradling some object,
"One Garou carried a horn fashioned from a bane; it mighta been feared once but one blow on that thing and the Wyrm's servants would know just who they're dealin' with."

He took out his own staff and planted it into the ground with a thump,

" Finally, one Garou possessed a staff that could always lead the wielder to fresh water."

He put away his stick and gave a sly smile, "These all sound great, don't they? Those pups sure thought they so. And they weren't the only ones. As the four eager Garou tore out upon the Luna-lit nightscape, somethin' else was watchin' em. A trickster spirit knew these Garou wouldn't appreciate the gifts Gaia had given them. It also wanted those spirits livin' in those fetishes free. Once the young pups were some distance away from Garou who would know better, the spirit approached them, as a shimmering white moon maiden. It offered to strengthen the spirits inside their treasures, as Gaia knew that they would face many trials that night."

Eaton's voice turned hiss-like as he said:

Your Klaive will cut through the toughest hide and the sturdiest armor! You will never lose a duel!

That necklace with change it's wearer into anything you desire, allowing you to fight alongside the most powerful of your kind!

The horn will call Gaia's forces to battle, aiding you werewolves in your fight! Your victory is assured!

And the staff will call water from stone, so you shall never thirst again!

"The pups thought that they were seenin' somethin' that no one Garou had: a servant of the goddess herself had chosen them! They willin'ly handed over the fetishes, proud of themselves, certain that their victory was at hand."

"Once it had hold of it's prizes in it's hands, the spirit straight up crushed every one of 'em as they looked on in horror." Eaton clapped his hands together, "The spirit's that had lived in the fetishes disappeared into the umbra, their jeering voices echoing in the Garou's minds."

Eaton let out a pitied laugh, "Though, that was nothin' compared to what their Elder's did to 'em. The Get of Fenris version ends with the lot of pups gettin' executed for their foolishness, if they even survived the trip back to the caern, while some Children of Gaia say the youngin's, one way or another, had to replace the fetishes they lost, penitence for their disregard for Gaia."

He stared carefully at his spoons, before turned his gaze back towards Zas, "I thought, why did they just hand their fetishes over? Didn't they think it was a trap? And well . . ."

He let out a sigh, "Eh, I don't think I have to explain."

Zas gave an audible sigh, "I think I see their error. The young pups grew greedy and did not appreciate what they had been entrusted with. It was their own arrogance that caused their loss. While that is a wise cautionary tale, I don't think that's what happened here-we underestimated our enemy; not out of arrogance, but more from ignorance. We made a terrible decision and let down our guard in the den of the beast"

Zas took a long look at the rapidly dispersing night sky before saying, "You spoke of another story-what happened in it?"

Eaton shrugged as he gave his reply, "Those pups mighta been greedy, and that mighta led 'em astray but they's thought Gaia was rewarding 'em. Bein' young and inexperienced Garou they didn't know the risks of dealin' with spirits and fell for it's tricks. Imagine if they'd run into a wyrm spirit! That story coulda got a whole lot worse."

By now, his legs were getting tired so he sat down on the ground, motioning for Zas to do the same, "It’s one thing to lose a fetish by misplacin’ or destroyin’ it, and though it doesn’t happen too often, the spirits that fit inside our stuff can turn against us. There once was a prized fetish among the Fiana. On command, the spirit would tap into the thoughts on an unwillin’ subject. It was called the Mind Thief.”

He folded his hands and held them open, “Course, knowin’ anyone that well makes ‘em clay in your hands. So it was a good thing the sept Philodox only used it for serious crimes against the Litany, so that he could easily get the truth in a tangled mess. The Mind Thief was used for a good long while. So old the spirit it actually changed housin’ several times. Some say before it was a fetish the spirt would still aid the judges by writin’ in the dirt! Then it was a scroll where the Garou could decide his judgments. The last known form was a brooch. Instead of wrtin’ anythin’ down, it spoke directly to it’s wielder.”

Eaton wore a longing expression, but then added, “So sounds cool, right? Unfortunately, some time later an Ahroun named Breaks-the-Spine thought of the Fetish not as a way to wrinkle out truth but to get an advantage over his enemies. I mean, if ya knew there secrets, flaws, and tactics you’d always have an upper hand. Course, he wasn’t so foolish as to take it for himself. He was foolish enough to do somethin’ else with it.”

His voice turned more somber as he continued,

“The wise Philodox fell defendin’ his caern in a battle against a clan of Black Spirals. Several of the Dancers were able to slip away back into hidin’, Breaks-the-Spine swearin’ revenge for his fallen sept-mate. Takin’ advantage of the caern’s confusion, he found the lost fetish and took off into the wild. When his rage didn’t give ‘em answers, the Mind Thief coaxed them from his victims. I even heard he used it on regular men livin’ in a village just cause it was within’ runnin’ distance. Unfortunately, Breaks-the-Spine wasn’t completely familiar with how the Mind Thief worked.”

Eaton pointed to his forhead, “The spirit didn’t just ask questions, it submerged itself into the mind of
it’s subjects. While the Ahroun was gettin’ the answers he sought, the spirit itself was bein’ told things of it’s own. A Wyrm servants thoughts are as chaotic as it’s master, and navigatin’ the storm tryin’ to find the truth caused the spirit to stumble. The Mind Thief grew aware just what the Garou did with its knowledge: whatever it told it’s wielder, he acted upon it. Still, the spirit had no reason to ever deceive a Garou . . . until a particularly nasty creature gave it one. You see, there was no determination from right and wrong from a Philodox anymore; The Mind Thief now only searched through rage and insanity. Thus, the spirit had to make it’s own judgments of what was valuable and what was nonsense. And that was when the fetish was lost.”

“Then Mind Thief at last deceived the great warrior: The fetish finally learned the location of the Black Spiral hive, but the spirit could no longer tell the truth from a lie. While Breaks-the-Spine led a horde of warriors to strike at the heart, the Dancers had been lyin’ in wait to finish ‘em off in an ambush. They struck down the mighty Arhoun, claiming the Mind Thief for themselves. The other Garou were killed only after even they had given what they knew, and the caern Breaks-the-Spine defended fell to the Wyrm after a brutal assault only a few days later. That was the last anyone has heard of the Mind Thief.”

Eaton stood back up, his posture heavy as he finished, “I feel as we took our fetishes for granted. Course we’re gonna miss ‘em when they’re gone but you’d think we should show a little more distinction with these things. We ain’t the only ones who would like to get their hands on ‘em.”

Zas remained standing during the story telling. He closed his eyes while listening in order to further gain insight from the wisdom of days long past and from the tale of old. It felt soothing almost to the Philodox to hear the story-to be reliving history; although the past certainly wasn't always bright. When Eaton had spoken his last few words however Zas's face cringed as if in pain. He said nothing however, allowing the words just spoken to fully take root before drawing a deep breath and crossing his arms.

"Yes. What you say is true. Our gaia given tools should not be so easily withdrawn from our grasps. It may be wise after we leave this place to remind all of us to make peace with our respective fetishes. This task that Red Oath has sent us on so that we may raise in rank...I don't think even she would have expected this."

Zas opens his eyes once more and looks at the rest of his packmates beginning to dry themselves off, but says to Eaton "I feel that there are many changes, including the way we treat what we've been given, that are coming."

The Silent Strider turns to look at the Bone Gnawer and after a pause says with some strain, "Tell me Eaton...do you feel as though you are treated as an equal in this pack-that your voice is as weighted as the others? Do you think I hold you accountable as much as the others in terms of the Litany or do you feel that I still Lord over you?"

Eaton's mouth formed a thin line for just a moment, before he replied, "Eh, I feel like everyone listens to what I gotta say and takes it to heart. If anyone disagrees they talk 'bout my argument and don't just point out that I'm a Bone Gnawer."

Stroking his beard, picking out some stray algae and tossing it on the ground he said, "Aside from that rage debacle I don't remember you pickin' on me for anythin' litany related. I'd like to think I've been a good werewolf as far as that's concerned. Why do ya ask?"

Zas shakes his head, "This town..." gesturing to Zavala and kicking into the dirt, "It has forced me to question many things-among them: what I could have done better. You have been the only one of the pack to have stated that you had issues with my litany determinations thus far in our packs journey...and I feel that you may be more likely to speak your mind about any other observations you have noticed, especially when called upon."

Zas then holds up his bow and says, "I don't want this to be what happens to the pack...and knowing that I have done all that I could have to prevent this from happening is important to me."

"What do ya think you could've done better?" Eaton asked, scratching at his scalp, "I think I shoulda noticed that we were bein' played by the girls. Instead, I let my rage get to me and didn't think straight until we woke up for real."

"Though his eyes do narrow as he adds, "Hey, I'm not here just to question yer calls. I think you made a great one back there about Huling that we made a promise and should keep it."

Zas sighs briefly as he says "The short answer to what I should have done better-everything. I should have condemned the death of the girls sooner. I should have remained awake and alert to prevent us from nearly losing our fetishes. I should have let Patience mother continue to suffer by preventing Zoe from healing her. From the first moment Zoe pointed out the strength of the Wyrm's presence I should have been more vigilant."

Zas looks to the pack and speaks quietly and somberly, "It could have been us floating down the river instead of our weapons. The fetishes themselves then could have been used to more devious and devilish purposes in the hands of the girls-just like the Black Spirals and the Mind Thief."

Zas then turns back to Eaton, "You think not killing Huling out of a promise is a good thing? What's the point of a child of Coyote keeping their word? Of telling the truth? Everyone expects you to lie and to fail, to falter and to stumble-it is a fools errand to try honoring our word. I can't justify why I insist on this pack trying to be truthful...it makes no sense. Sure I can be honest, but why should I hold the rest of you accountable to that standard-it's not in the litany..."
Zas hangs his head, "Nothing in this town makes sense. I'm not even certain I'm making sense."

Eaton nodded as Zas said his considered, but at the mention of letting Mrs. Fitch suffer his eyes grow wide and his lips quiver as if trying to refrain from interjecting. After he finishes, Eaton says,

"Wha? Ya think that poor woman deserved that? She couldn't help it if that thing forced her way out of her! Helpin' her was one of the smart things we did, m'thinks."

He lowers his head to that he could look the Philodox in the eye,

"Just 'cause we serve coyote doesn't give us a free pass to do what we think is right. Sure, the litany may not spell out "don't lie in this instance" though it would make your job a heck of a lot easier if it did. But what about submittin' to those above ya and bein' honorable to the folks you can tear to shreds? If we're lyin' to everyone so others can't trust us, I think we'd be breakin' two laws."

He rubbed the back of his neck, "Course, I ain't completely innocent as I've made my problems sound worse for some free handouts before. But what's why we've got way: to make sure we follow the rules even if they ain't so clear cut."

He lets out a chuckle, "Folks expect us to fail? Then how 'bout we go prove 'em wrong?"

Zas lifts his eyes to meet Eaton as he says, "So in your mind telling the whole truth counts as submitting to those of higher rank?"

Zas rubs the side of his head, "I do not envy you then when you report our dealings here to Red Oath."

Zas then looks back to the city and beyond with a grim smile, "How exactly do you think we should go and do that? How can we claim here that this situation is not a failure?"

Eaton's tone turned nervous as he said, "Well, as long as we learn from our mistakes, how harsh can ol' Red be? I think we're bein' harsh on ourselves 'cause we know just how much worse this coulda been. As for recountin', we didn't know the full danger of Patience just yet. It was only after she put us under that dreamin' spell that we knew just how much everythin' fell apart."

The gears in his mind turning he added, "We could honestly say we fell for their trap without knowin' it. She did invite us over to her house. And hey, we were really tired at the time, so non of us were thinkin' straight. I mean, we're frustrated with ourselves now but I wouldn't say this is a failure. We got what Red Oath wanted and find out just what it was bein' used for. It ain't the end of the world."

Zas chuckled, "Yes, I'm certain our blatant veil violations and being gullible enough to knowingly fall for the enticement of a strange wyrm servant and nearly losing all of our fetishes will be viewed as little more than youthful indiscretions...given that we were tasked with this mission in the hopes of all becoming adren. We look like great candidates."

Zas's chuckle died off quickly and was replaced with his normal morose-like demeanor, "No, Eaton. It may not be the end of the world, but the idea of us not only not advancing in rank but likely being punished for our actions here, and the strength of the wyrm that managed to crop up here otherwise undetected...is well quite serious indeed."

After a moment he adds, "I am certain that no matter what, the words you speak to Red Oath of our journey here and back will be of vital importance in determining what becomes of our fates. To put it plainly-you...are our first, last, and honestly only means of defense in terms of how the pack will be viewed by Red Oath and the Caern in Nacodoches. If you haven't already, you may want to start preparing what you will say."

"The thing is though." Eaton began, holding up one finger, "Is that it still all worked out, didn't it? What are they gonna punish us for-for almost doin' somethin'? The veil should be fine-everyone was drugged out their mind and those brats put on more tricks than we did. I reckon these people knew 'bout this strange stuff and anythin' we did wasn't the weirdest they've seen. I'm sure those up in Nacodoches are gonna care more about what we found rather than our mistakes."

Though clearly trying to lighten the mood, The Bone Gnawer sighed and shook his head, "I know your nervous, but I ain't gonna lie to her or leave stuff out that makes us look foolish. I can only dress up what happened so much. Makes the decisions we make all the more important, huh?"

Getting an idea, he adds, "Do ya know any stories where everyone wins all the time? Are they any good? What makes the story is the choices folks make and how those choices change 'em. Now, we mighta made some dumb choices before and not just here in Zavala. But do we keep pityin' ourselves or are we able to look back and learn from 'em, maybe even laugh at ourselves?"

Zas considered his packmates words before responding. He truly didn't know of any stories where the victor won every time.
After a pause the philodox looked at his friend and said, "I am not Red Oath, but given what's happened here-were I in her place we would not fare well. The litany doesn't call us to just casually care about the veil but to actively not break it-to protect it. There's no guarantee that the townspeople won't recall what occurred and the girls activity here draws even further attention to the area. Granted, yes we should learn from our mistakes but being an adren means not making the kind of mistakes we have. We don't know what sort of ripples our actions here have stirred up yet."

Zas takes a single breath, "I'm not telling you how to fulfill your auspice as you've done well and I have no need or right to at this moment, but I think you going into Nacodoches more prepared to defend our actions here and being ready for a fight of sorts will better serve the needs of the pack than relying on Red Oath's understanding nature. That is all I mean by this."

Eaton considered Zas' words, taking a moment before he said, "Sure, we screwed up but I guess what I'm tryin' to say is don't worry 'bout it. We got back our fetishes, whatever was goin' on here is gone, and we're all still alive. Think 'bout what we do have; I learned it lets ya breath a little easier."

He pulled out his broken saw and continued, "If yer cheered up enough, I'm gonna see if I can get this thing workin' again. Or do I need to tell ya more stories?"

Zas shakes his head, "It's my job to be..."
Then as if he remembers something, the philodox lets a small smile grow on his face, "No more stories will be needed at the moment, but feel free to share them more often. Learning from others mistakes can teach us just as much as us making them."

The philodox then leaves his packmate to his assembling and begins the trek back to the city.
