Calcification or Bust Empty
PostSubject: Calcification or Bust   Calcification or Bust EmptySun 07 Sep 2014, 22:26

The air in Los Perdidos brimmed with anticipation as Listens-to-Willows began the rite of caern building. Zoe was disappointed not to be directly involved in the process, but she took her position as a protector of the caern seriously. The hymns of the Garou and chants of the elder Theurge wafted through the air accompanied by eerie canine harmonies. The scene was both beautiful and chilling under the blood red moon. When strange lights and shadows appeared in the abandoned town, Zoe knew their time had come to defend the caern for which they had already fought so hard.

The young Theurge raced down the hill in lupus form then quickly shifted into Homid at the edge of town. She paused for a moment, ducking behind a boulder, to enact the gift of the spirit that would allow her rifle unlimited ammunition. She then peered over the top of the rock and sighted her weapon toward the lone street running through the heart of the town.

The glowing lights proved to be coming from a variety of geometric spirits who were providing a framework for a dozen pattern-spiders who had been attempting to calcify the poisoned town before they caught wind of the caern being built up the hill. Zoe was surprised to see such a strong Weaver presence so far from any road or large city. She then recalled the Weaver-bane they had fought in the church on their first visit to this Gaia-forsaken place and the webbing that enveloped the pit where the yet-to-be-born wolf spirit had patiently waited to give birth to Skin Rippers.

As the spiders abandoned their web and made their way toward Zoe and the soon-to-be caern, she began picking them off one-by-one with her rifle. The pattern spiders, which were not built for combat, went down easily enough, though they quickly became the least of her concern.

To her left an area of webbing the size of a horse suddenly sprang to life, fangs dripping with poison and bright yellow eyes fixed on its target as it lunged toward her. Her breed form was not agile enough to leap out of the way as the spider, oozing with Wyrm-infested sores, leaped upon her and sunk its fangs into her right shoulder. Using the momentum of the spider to her advantage, Zoe kicked both legs up into the abdomen of the arachnid and sent it flying over her head. She quickly rolled onto her stomach and finished it off with three shots to the head and torso.

By this time a dozen more pattern spiders had emerged from the disassembled church building. Zoe moved to take them out as before but found her right arm paralyzed by the venom from the Wyrm-tainted spider. Shifting into Glabro she willed her arm to regain its mobility, but the pattern spiders were on her before she could raise her weapon again. The chittering creatures quickly began wrapping her legs in webbing and dragging her toward the pattern web. Using her left arm she reached across her torso into her belt and began slashing at her restraints with her War-blessed knife, which thankfully made light work of the web, though her captors began biting at her freed legs, injecting additional poison.

Feeling completely outnumbered and refusing to be an Iron Rider who died ironically at the hand of the Weaver, Zoe funneled all her rage and shifted into Crinos, shredding the remaining webbing and smashing the nearby spiders with ease, though her right arm was still weak and her legs felt like they could give out at any moment. The geometric spirits had retreated into the dilapidated buildings and for the moment the street appeared empty.

Zoe cautiously walked deeper into the town, seeking any other corrupted spirits that may try to disturb the creation of the caern. There was no sign of the geomids; they must have retreated at the first sign of conflict. The pattern spiders had worked quickly to claim this town for Grandmother Spider (the Weaver) as evidenced by the intricate structure of webbing covering almost every building. Zoe closed her eyes for a moment to sense whether there was any additional Wyrm taint in the town. Her senses are immediately overwhelmed by the stench of death emanating from directly above her.

Her eyes snap open and her arms point the rifle toward a large shadow blocking the light of the crimson moon. A black spider the size of a stagecoach with gaping sores, fiery green eyes, and bared fangs showered webbing down on her in a twisted torrent. She narrowly dodged the attack and aimed again, grazing one of the creature's eight hideous legs. The creature shrieked and the high-pitched sound caused Zoe to drop her rifle and cover her feral ears in pain.

The spider took advantage of her distraction, clamped its fangs into her leg, and shook her like a limp doll. The paralysis this time was immediate. When the beast dropped her, she did her best to crawl away and grab her rifle, but the accurately aimed webbing of the spider adhered to her disabled leg and held tight. When she tried to claw it away, another stream pinned her arms above her head, leaving her torso exposed to the creature. She howled a desperate cry for help, but a final piece of web formed a gag in her mouth, choking out her voice.

Content that its victim was no longer a threat, the creature dragged Zoe back toward the pattern web. She was about to find out what those pattern spiders intended to do to her all those months ago when she first met the Laughing Stranger in the penumbra of Nacogdoches. Only this time she was on her own and could only pray that someone heard her cry before it was cut off. If not, she would soon be calcified.

An answering howl sounded nearby and Rends the Gar soared high into the air, moonlight glistening off his renewed steely fur. Brandishing his club in one claw and his knife in the other the Fenrir dropped down into the middle of the horde of spiders, crushing many beneath his massive frame before he even set about slashing and smashing with wild abandon.

Zoe could feel Rage pulsing out from him, renewing her and maintaining his own ferocity with a supply of Luna's might as infinite as the Pattern Spiders. Seeing zoe being dragged off, Rends took the club in both hands, swinging it with a roar into a half crumbled wall and sending a huge chunk of stone smashing into the corrupted spider. It screeched, skittering back and forgetting Zoe for a moment. Rends howled again, seeming somehow more joyful than he normally was when waist deep among enemies in a hopeless fight to the death.

"Hey Zoe! Guess what! I got me a wife!"

His smile was unmistakable as he set about again with his weapons, not at all concerned at the never ending tide of spiders. He howled again, reveling in the slaughter.

"Hold on a sec and we'll get ya outta there and we can all celebrate like Fenrir!"

He punctuated the comment by biting a spider that had been vainly trying to bite into his shoulder and tearing it in half.

Zoe, still gagged and restrained by the webbing, looked wide-eyed in shock following her packmate's declaration of finding a wife. She began rattling off questions, but they were unintelligible due to the gobs of webbing covering her mouth. It was probably for the best because she was certain to put a damper on the boy's wedded bliss.

"Did I hear you say you got a wife Rends? What would Roaring Jack say? This is time for killin' not bed makin'"
Kefka laughs vibrantly as he runs through the town picking off the few spiders that remained around Zoe with her rifle she had dropped. He runs over to her and kneels down cutting her free with his dagger. He leaves both the dagger and and the her rifle with her.

"You dropped this back yonder. you may want to take better care of it or it might wind it ways into my arsenal." He says with a friendly wink.

He then walks over to Rends making a show of punting the spiders as he goes feeling himself get full on rage again. He taps Rends on the shoulder and pulls down his ear to whisper in it as he points to the large corrupted spider.

"Remember Akna the first time?"

Rends nods while absentmindedly smashing another 3 spiders in one blow without looking. Kefka grins.

"Throw me."

Right on cue, Rends grabs Mocks the Night by his shirt front and hurls him headlong into the massive spider. Just before impact Mocks explodes into Crinos and hits in a shower of fangs and knives. The spider tries to crawl away, surprised at the new arrivals and their sudden ferocity. Rends calmly makes his way to the spider, still chuckling.

"Hell, why not both? This here's likely to be the last serious fightin' we see fer a while. I may as well pick up somethin' new ta pass the time."

Casually, he grabs two of the spider's front legs, dragging it back out and away from its den so they can continue their work. When it tries to bite at him he bashes it in the face with his club, fending off the venom dripping fangs.

"Sure hope she can cook."

A pair of pattern spiders leaped toward Mocks from above, but Zoe fired off two quick shots as the Ragabash is pelted in the face with dismembered metallic remains.

"The only way this rifle goes into your arsenal is over my dead body. My papa made this for me and only me, brother."

Filled with new vigor thanks to Rends' spiritual assistance, Zoe bit, clawed, and shot her way through the hoard and toward her packmates. The largest spider, though off kilter, still made a valiant effort to spout webbing and bite at the three Garou, but Zoe managed to dodge its attacks and dive toward its lair where more of the same poured out on Los Perdidos.

Another larger-than-life arachnid came to aid the one Rends had dragged away, but this time Zoe was prepared. As the second spider drew up on its hind legs to impale Rends with its spindly front legs, Zoe released her own pattern spider from her watch, which quickly bound two of the beast's legs together, causing it to fall awkwardly behind the Ahroun.

"And you? You married her? You don't even know her! Where did she even come from?"

Another couple of shots at a few approaching pattern spiders.

"This place is crawling with Wyrm taint and apparitions. How do you know she's not one of them?"

Rends rolled his eyes as he tore a leg off of the first spider, then impaled the spider with its own appendage as he turned to Zoe and absentmindedly smashed some spiders off his back.

"Come on, gimme some credit. I ain't gonna touch nothin' Wyrm corrupted. Hell, she saved my life and defended the Ritemasters tonight! She kilt some Vampire woman what was gonna get me with a fireball!"

He chuckled, grabbing the injured spider and holding it steady for his packmates, ignoring the fangs that couldn't pierce his layers of armor.

"Can you imagine that? A regular human kilt a vampire like nothin'! I don't think she's even Kinfolk! She saw me kill four Vampires and tear 'em to bits and she never batted an eye! What more kin ya ask for in a woman?"

Mocks is charges at the spider Rends is holding and claws through it with minor effort. As he dusts himself off he turns to Rends.

"Can she cook?"

He laughs as punts more spiders into the air for Zoe to shoot with her rifle.

Zoe shot the punted spiders with ease as she yelled over the cacophony.

"That supposed to make me feel better? If she ain't kin and she ain't afraid of you, I'd be wondering why."

Zoe slashed an oncoming spider with her knife and tossed it toward Rends to finish the job.

"Though I reckon if she turns out to be nothin' fishy, she'd be perfect for ya!"

Kefka laughs causing bits of mutilated spiders he was chewing apart to fly everywhere.

"She would only be fishy if he found her by a river or lake."

Rends winds up and hits the spider like a baseball with his club. It goes soaring over the Burned Rock, coming to a crash somewhere in the forest.

"I dunnow, they's jest somethin' about her."

He gets an almost listful look in his eye as the second big spider rears up and blasts him with webbing, catching him full in the chest. Rather than getting tangles, he muscles out of it then grabs the strands and starts pulling the spider in. Then suddenly his face goes to sheer horror as he grabs the spider, stabbing down into it and carving open a big gash.

"Oh shit. You reckon I gotta get her a gift or somethin'?"

Zoe tossed a few well-placed shots into the gashed-open head of the spider.

"You mean other than her freedom from four vampires? Of course! You think wives just grow on trees? You got one now; treat her right!"

"Really it was five, but she got one of 'em. And they was a skinny feller there too."

The spider was putting up a fierce fight now, and Rends had to put away Ribcage and his knife to hold it steady.

"Well what do ya get a woman like that? And out here! I ain't exactly gonna run to town and pick up some fancy... French... thing!"

He punctuated the last three words with surges of strength, cracking the terrified spider's carapace.
