PostSubject: Not All Wounds Are Physical   Thu 10 Jul 2014, 09:51

The Prodigals stumbled back into San Antonio, patched but not wholly mended by the Get Theurges. The town on the other hand fared worse than they. Though the others disposed of the corpses, the destruction of the town and the blood in the streets provided a grim reminder of recent events. The few survivors that Father Ramone managed to protect remained cloistered in the church.

Zoe accompanied Sylvester and Kefka back to the yet again abandoned Alamo to retrieve their weapons. Kefka declared a desperate need for booze and scurried back into town. Zoe and Rends followed their Ragabash friend at a distance.

"How are your wounds fairing, friend? Were your tribesmen able to provide complete healing for you? If you are still suffering, I can mend what damage still ails you. It's the least I can do after I attacked you in my frenzy and you shielded me from the blast despite you being worse off than I was at the time."

Zoe smiled admiringly at her Garou brother with all the love she imagined she would have for her blood brother if she had one. "You really take your calling seriously, brother. I appreciate your willingness to protect us at all costs and to throw yourself fully into any fray we encounter. You do us, your tribe, and Gaia proud. I only wish the same could be said for me."

A deep sigh paired with downcast eyes betrayed her heavy heart and belief that she had utterly failed her pack in their fight against the horrific beast Akna.

Rends gave his packmate an askance look, not quite sure about what hes hearing.

"Thanks, zoe. Its always come natural for me to kill stuff. Reckon i got lucky that way. All i gotta do to follow my auspice is what comes natural."

He coughs, looking a bit pale.

"Why you upset though? You done fine that fight. I have the tools, experience and build to take more punishment than yall and to jest kill better."

He scratches absently at a still fresh gash in his side thats been bandaged, then pats her on the back with a bloody fingered hand.

"Battle is my calling. War runs in my veins twice over. You done good, even if ya lost your head. We all do sometimes. Better you attack me than mocks or zas. I can take a lot more punishment than them. 'Sides, i reckon you done better than zas at least back there. At least you hit the damn thing more than once... never thought an injun could be that bad with a bow..."

He trails off, then gives his packmate a wolfish smile.

"How about if next time i throw you headlong at the avatar of the wyrmwith nothing but a pocket knife?"

Zoe sniffed out a curt laugh at Rends' comment about using her as a human missile next time.

"I don't think Mocks would ever forgive you for throwing me instead of him. Zas grounded the beast and scared off a pile of skin rippers. I'm pretty sure I only landed one shot on that blasted bird. I ended up wasting time activating my weapon, trying to regenerate myself, and killing one whole skin ripper. Oh, and attacking my packmate.

"I know neither my tribe nor my auspice is specifically designed for battle, but I wasn't even able to help keep the pack safe or healed. Three of us resorted to frenzying just to keep from dying. I couldn't even use my watch to try and weaken the damned thing, nor could I summon any spirits to help us without condemning them to their deaths."

The disheartened Theurge sat on the tattered front porch of the local bar, her shoulders slumped and her confidence wilted.

"And you know what the best part is? We get to hunt down that flaming monster and fight it again."

Her words dripped with dark sarcasm as her eyes narrowed into angry slits.

"Why couldn't the Uktena leave well enough alone? Why did they have to summon this thing and destroy the gauntlet and the local spirits and so many humans and Garou? I know we're Garou and I know we're supposed to fight the Wyrm wherever we find it, but is it just me or does it feel like an uphill climb with no end or hope for victory in sight?"

Rends followed his packmate, listening to her rant. As she sits down, he sits next to her, propping up his feet and wincing as he settles down. Zoe finishes, and Sylvester considers her words for a moment before replying.

"I reckon I can understand what you're sayin'. You feel like cuz you ain't tearing everythin' to bits at the drop of a hat that you ain't no use in a fight. Some packs would probably say that's true. Hell, most of my Tribe probably would. They's all wrong."

He leans over, looking her in the eyes.

"We's a pack. We ain't gonna be judged on what any one of us does, but on how we work as a whole in servin' Gaia. Now I reckon we got fighters like me and Eaton and Mocks, and we got a judge to make us feel bad and to stand on his soap box, but if it was jest us we'd only be half a pack. We need someone to talk to spirits and handle the more mystical stuff."

He leans back again, leaning back and lacing his fingers behind his head.

"Eaton stinks too much for all but a skunk spirit to approach, Zas would probably jest get trampled by 'em, and Mocks... well Mocks is a crazy bastard. That leaves me, and I tend to do most a' my talkin' with a club or knife." He smiles again.

"Sure the fight against the Phoenix may not have been your biggest moment, but you'll have your chance. We'll have a chance to plan and make allies next time and you'll give it the whippin' it deserves probably 'afore I can even get to it."

He looks pensive for a moment.

"I know you ain't spent much time with my Tribe, but you ever heard the tale of Uli Brightjaws?"

Hears the Song visibly relaxes as the weight of her believed failure is lifted off her shoulders. A grateful smile adorns her face and her voice regains some of her normal cheer.

"You're right, Rends. I may not have been extremely useful in the midst of the fight with the phoenix, but I was able to use my watch to weaken the enemies we faced before her and was able to use my gift to keep you alive after ya got blasted with silver back in the town hall. I also used the spirits to send for help to the caern and Jack and probably got them headed this way before Ebony spurred em on faster. And all those fancy gifts y'all were using? Pretty sure I summoned most of the spirits y'all needed to talk to to get em."

Zoe laughed aloud and playfully shoved Rends. "You're right! You guys woulda been phoenix fodder without my help!"

When Rends asked about Uli Brightjaws, she shook her head and turned to face him, sitting cross legged like a child eager for storytime.

"I'm not familiar with the tail, but Eldgrim suggested there was a story of one of your tribe that would apply to how I felt about the phoenix fight. Do tell."

Rends chuckles and shakes his head.

"Sorry, zoe but i aint no storyteller, id jest make a mess of it. Eaton may know it, and if not ill get one of the fenrir galliards to tell it to us. But the short version is, doubring yourself is doubring gaia, your tribe and your pack. We work in packs to make up for our individual weaknesses, but wes a proud people. Dont let your judgements of yourself interfere with your work, and trust your pack to help you become stronger."

He considers for a moment.

"I guess thays pretty well it. Good story though, told right."

Zoe nods and smiles gratefully.

"Thanks, Rends. I will keep that in mind in the future. And I'll have to see if Eaton knows the tale. It sounds interesting."

She looks out across the street and down toward the devastated homes and shops.

"I'm not being down on us. I think we did well considering the circumstances. But as the Get Ahroun who eats, drinks, and breathes combat, is there anything you think we could have done better and that we could do more effectively when we face the phoenix again?"

Rends shruggs, counting off on his fingers.

"I have a few general ideas. We need a way to counter that weird fire, but the oilers is workin on that. If possible i wanna get a couple more fetish weapons for the paxk so you and me aint the only ones with real weapons all the time. We need to keep it from taking off so we can actually attack it sooner nexr time, assuming whatever zas dis aint permanent. Speaking of, if hes gonna keep using that bow hed better learn how. I always thought injins was born with a bow in hand, but he proved that wrong. And we nees to keep spread out. Balefires nasty, but he could only hit an area so we five him less chance to hit all of us."

He smiles again, obviously eager.

"That said, next time we gonna have a few packs of get with us, so i dont reckon its got any kind of chance balefire or not."

Zoe listens closely and analytically as the battle-savvy young man shared his thoughts. She nodded at some and cocked her head quizzically at others.

"Sounds like the Oilers are having difficulties of their own if I understand Ebony correctly. With half of their pack missing I'm not sure how much progress has been made on countering balefire. Our Galliard seemed to fair better than most using his gift. Perhaps we should seek to acquire the same for ourselves, Mocks, and Zas."

"If it's fetish weapons we want, we may have to zip down to Jack's son to fix some up for us. I mean, any Theurge has the ability, but I don't yet have the knowhow and we don't have time for me to learn. Then again if Ebony had sent O'Toole this way..."

Her glance drifted to the pocketwatch she was mindlessly caressing. "He made these weapons and could likely make more like them. But we certainly don't have time to get to Galveston and back before that thing reforms, I'm certain of it."

"As far as keeping it grounded is concerned, Zas has those new spirit ghost tendrils that were pretty effective in other fights. And if my pattern spider isn't expended from previous encounters, he'd be able to help slow the thing down as well."

At his racial jab towards Zas, Zoe gave Rends a stern scowl. "Look, Rends, I realize that you and the natives had a number of nasty run ins when you were younger, but Zas is not one of them. And not all of them fight with bows, some, like Zas, prefer tomahawks or in our case claws and teeth. He made excellent shots, best I could tell, but that bird was too agile and deft to be easily struck. We're a pack, a team, a family, remember? We're supposed to work together. So either lay off Zas or use your strengths to strengthen him, too, okay?"

"And the spreading out makes sense so that we don't all get hit at once. And if we're lucky we won't be fending off a horde of Skin Rippers at the same time. Though if that's the case, you won't be able to resupply our rage, will you?"

She smiled and nodded appreciatively. "Good point. Next time face this thing we should have a few more allies. It may bring friends, too, though."

Rends waves off his packmate's concerns.

"I can do jest fine in the middle of a horde. I jest need to get real pissed then whack someone real hard. Shouldn't be an issue, long as Mocks don't have everyone focused on killin' him. That other stuff is mostly a wish list. Gettin fetishes ain't gonna be realistic in the short term probably, but we can manage until then."

When she snaps at him for his comment on Zas, he has a brief angry flash behind his eyes but stays outwardly cool.

"Look, I might a' discounted Zas right off the bat for bein' Injun, but since we formed a pack I been workin' with him and gotten to know him. And now I got other reasons to give him shit. We ain't had a fight yet where he don't either get trampled by some prey critter, make a fool of himself killin' one thing in the dumbest way possible, or been off doin' his own thing until the very end."

He spits disdainfully.

"Hell, remember when he deuled Eaton? We all thought it was dumb cuz Zas was right, even me. And then they fight and Zas goes down like nothin', didn't even get a hit in. He had right on his side, and all of us on his side, and still failed. He made that fool promise to Chief Bowl to watch over the Injuns when he knew it might conflict with out goals as a pack and as Garou, making our job harder down the road. And he couldn't even keep the promise in the end. He wanted to kill RIP Ford right off, but we all thought it was too dangerous. So he rolls over and goes along without barely any fight. He's shown himself to be incompetent, weak and he won't speak up unless you poke at him good and hard. You think I don't like him cuz he's Injun? No. I don't like him cuz he's a weakling and a fool."

Zoe closed her eyes and silently mouthed the creed of wisdom.

I shall be calm, I shall be prudent, I shall be merciful.
I shall think before I act and listen before I think.

She opens her eyes, stands up, and places a gentle hand on Rends' shoulder.

"Talk to him, Rends. Strength, physical and otherwise, comes naturally to you. You managed to take city-slicker Kefka and turn him into a decent, albeit insane, fighter. I'm sure Zas would be willing to listen and learn from you. That is how we grow as a pack, is it not? Growing strength out of weakness with the help of our packmates? Just promise me you'll talk to him."

She glances into the bar, sees Mocks helping himself to some refreshments, and laughs softly to herself. Her eyes return to Rends with hopeful expectance.

He returns her stare for a long moment, face inscrutable. After a while, he turns away, blowing out a sigh.

"Alright. I'll talk ta him. Don't know what good it'll do though."

He regards her again.

"Why's it bother you so much that we don't get along? We can work together, and if he makes a ruling on the Litany I listen. Ain't that enough?"

Zoe exhales loudly and sits down again, looking out over the abandoned street.

"We are a pack, a unit, a body if you will. I'm not saying you have to like Zas or enjoy his company like you do mine or Mocks', but bad mouthing his efforts and insulting him is like burning your own leg with balefire. You weaken part of our body and the whole pack suffers for it. On the flipside if you strengthen that same part you're that much better off, right? Telling me what's wrong with Zas isn't going to help him improve. It's just sowing discord among our ranks and making me think less of him."

Zoe returns her gaze to Rends, searching his eyes deeply. "Do you trust him?"

"Hey, you're the one who brought this up in the first place. I ain't said nothin' to you I wouldn't say to him neither. He knows he ain't my favorite person, and I'm sure I ain't his neither but I'll talk to him since you make it such a big deal."

He shakes his head, looking exasperated.

"Do I trust him? C'mon, ain't I already answered that? How can you trust someone you don't really respect? I trust him to keep the Litany, and to try to keep us in line, but do I trust him to back me up in a fight, or to come through in a pinch? No. He ain't shown he can be trusted like that. I'm willin' to be proven wrong though. I jest ain't seen nothin' that give me a lot of confidence in him."

Zoe stands and shakes her head.

"I'm sorry you feel that way. I hope future events will be able to change your mind. If you cannot trust the actions of your own packmate, then it will be very difficult to act as a unit."

She pauses, considers her next words, then continues.

"Do you believe that Gaia brought us together for a purpose greater than we could accomplish on our own or do you think it was just Coyote and the Stranger's doing for their own mischievous purposes?"

Rends settles down again, apparently glad for the change of subject.

"I ain't thought about it much. I reckon I'm here to kill Wyrm critters, so as long as they keep comin', I's doin' my job. Either way, whether it's Coyote or Gaia or both or neither what brought us together, what we's doin' is right. We was in the best position to put a stop to the Phoenix last night, and we's in the best spot to put an end to it in Perdido."

He considers for another long moment.

"I'm jest a foot soldier now, so I'm more set on takin' orders than givin' em. But we're gettin' a picture of what's goin' on out here, and it ain't pretty. They's somethin' big brewin' out in the plains, somethin' we need to put a stop to. But it ain't gonna be by jest pure strength we do it. We gotta be smart, come at 'em like they ain't expectin'. So I intend to learn all I can right now of the enemy and their ways, so when the day comes I can lead my pack and others to victory."

Zoe stretches her legs out and leans back against the rickety wall of the building behind her, which creaks quietly even under her modest homid weight. She listens silently then, mouth slightly agape, looks up at Luna as she rises upon them.

"What about killing things that aren't Wyrm critters? Like drunken indians or misguided cavalry men? Certainly Ford's men didn't know they had sworn allegience to a Wyrm-loyal werewolf. I mean, maybe a few were Spiral kinfolk, but surely not all of them were. And what about all those humans who followed a charismatic Cordova to their deaths. Sure, Cordova deserved a trip straight back to Hell, but what about the others who believed they were fighting for what was right?"

A soft evening breeze blew a strand of dark brown hair into the olive-skinned woman's fiery green eyes. She turns those intense eyes on the young man sitting nearby but is careful not to scold him as she has already done tonight.

"Rends-the-Gar, you are not merely a foot soldier, not to us at least and not to any of the up and coming pups and cliath who have heard your name. When it comes to annihilating the Wyrm, though we do not call you alpha, I believe we all defer to your natural and gift-given abilities in combat. You may not be interested in giving orders, but as the sole Ahroun of our pack, and a Get of Fenris at that, that weight falls on your shoulders. I personally have not observed you shirking that duty. I believe even now you are succesfully leading your pack to victory."

Zoe laughs and shakes her head, pushing that wayward tendril of hair back behind her ear.

"Look at me going on about philosophy and technicalities while the phoenix spirit is out there reforming itself in preparation for another attack, Gaia only knows where. I'll leave you to get some rest. I think I'm gonna go meditate a while outside of town and try to build up my spiritual reserves for the next fight."

The Ahroun listens to his packmate, returning her gaze evenly. As she finishes, he leans forward, continuing to hold her eyes, his own eyes a grim twinkle beneath his hat.

"Look, Zoe, I'm gonna be honest with you. I know lots of our kind fight for all kinds of things. Some fight for protectin', others fer money, others for fame. Folks like me? We fight and kill cuz it's in our blood. Even if I weren't a Garou, I'd be a killer. I jest happen to have somethin' to fight for, but I'd be fightin' and killin' with or without Luna's blessing. Cordova's men, Ford's men, them Injun hostages, Hell, even Ranger Karnes- I'd kill em all without a second thought if they gave me a reason to, and not regret it a bit. Ya, I wanna kill Wyrm stuff every chance I get, and some of 'em may even think they's in the right. Some of 'em may even be a little right. I don't care. They's jest another challenge fer me to overcome, another stone fer me to sharpen my claws on. There will never be a day when I don't lead the charge into battle, but it ain't cuz I'm a zealot or even a strong believer. It's cuz I wanna taste fresh blood and hear the screams of dying men as I tear their guts out. Some day I may be more, and I aim to be a leader among the Garou, but fer now, I jest wanna kill shit."

Zoe quietly sucked on her lips and swallowed nervously. She had seen that look in her brother's eye before as he regained his rage by Luna's light.

His bloodlust was nothing new to her. She always knew him to be itching for a kill, but hearing him spell it out in so many words gave the modestly statured female an added dose of healthy fear, as one fears something like gunpowder or a cannon. As long as her brother's rage was directed elsewhere, she appreciated his willingness and ability to kill when needed, but even now she felt a slight chill down her spine as she looked into his fiery eyes, knowing full well that even in his homid form he could quickly end her life.

"Has anything ever caused you to hesitate to kill someone or regret doing so?"

She took an unintentionally sharp breath as she momentarily glanced away. Her eyes were hard with a tinge of fear when she resumed eye contact.

"Would you kill me if the situation called for it?"

His reply comes after a long moment of the predator's eyes searching his packmate's. He breaks eye contact after an awkward pause, whispering the words.

"Ya. Ya, I would."

He studies the distance for another long moment, not looking at Zoe as he continues quietly.

"They's things out there worse than death, Zoe. Things out there, and things that lurk inside us. Our people are warriors, and we're fighting a lost cause. We cain't win the war, but we'll every last one of us die trying. Some of us, that can push us to try things we shouldn't. Mess with powers best left alone. I seen what happens when a Garou's ambition outweighs his sense, and I couldn't stop it. I was too slow to save my family, my town. I ain't sayin' you'd do anything like that, but for us our worst enemies are inside us sometimes, and sometimes we can't win no matter how hard we fight."

He gives a humorless chuckle.

"Hell, maybe my urge to kill is one of them things even. Sometimes I think they must be more to life, even for Garou; but they's too much goin' on right now. I cain't get distracted and get y'all killed cuz I ain't all there for the fight. Back in Vinagroon..."

He trails off, leaving the thought hanging in the wind.

"So ya, I reckon I could kill you. Or any of the pack. But if it ever came to that, you'd have already been kilt by whatever it was you'd been fightin'."

He finally meets her eye again, still grim but the predatory gleam is gone.

"And I expect the same from y'all if I fall."

Zoe nods twice, her eyes solemn yet sympathetic.

"Understood, brother. And yes, we would do the same to you or die trying."

She stands and looks off toward the edge of town past the Alamo.

"But I pray to any deity who will listen that it doesn't come to that. I'd rather fight that damned phoenix a dozen times by myself than have to come toe to toe with any one of my Prodigal brothers. And you better believe I would do everything in my power to fix you before I resorted to killing you."

Zoe forces a smile and sniffs out a short laugh as she claps a hand on Rend's shoulder.

"So, do me a favor and don't go getting yourself possessed or tainted by any Wyrm critters, okay? Cleansing's a bitch when your patient isn't cooperative."

Zoe turns toward the edge of town and begins walking off into the cleansing glow of Luna's light.
